In the first place, I wish to provide for the English reader a translation of the earliest extant Arabic work of Hindi arithmetic. It shows this system at its earliest stages a…nd the first steps in its development, a subject not yet well known except for readers of some Arabic publications by the present writer. This book is therefore of particular importance for students of the history of mathematical techniques. The medieval author, AI-UqHdisI, was, it seems, not noticed by bibliographers; neither was his work, which lay hardly noticed by modern scholars until 1960 when I happened to see a microfilm copy of it in the Institute of Arabic Manu scripts in Cairo. A steady labour immediately followed to make a comparative study of the text together with over twenty other texts, some of them not yet known to scholars. This pursuit resulted in (i) a doctoral degree awarded to me in 1966 by the University of Khartoum, (ii) the publication of several texts in Arabic including the text here translated, and (iii) the publication of several articles in Arabic and English on the history of arithmetic in the Middle Ages. The second purpose of this book is to make the main results of my study available to the English reader.

Original wraps with colour map titled in English and Arabic to each panel. Printed by Press Agency. 288pp including author's introduction, index, and key to symbols in English and Arabi…c. The street atlas itself (pp27-262) is printed primarily in b/w with some blue shading, each sheet with English and Arabic labels. Wraps good with a little loss to the spine tail, and barcode sticker to the English panel. Interiors very good with a couple of closed tears and occasional creasing. The author describes this as the first atlas of its kind in the region if not the Third World. Drawing on Kuwait Municipality maps he felt it necessary to make locals and visitors aware of Kuwait's fast developing modern urban topography, and thereby make travel quicker and reduce congestion (pp1-2). Features shown pictorially or by distinctive shading include mosques, public gardens, playgrounds, petrol stations, car parking, electricity substations, cooperatives and shops, sectors, desert, cemeteries, parks, sea, hospital - clinic, and police stations. The Index gives the area name and page number for each street. There are also area maps on smaller scales. This looks to be very rare with Worldcat locating this edition at only 1 institution (OCLC 30496711: Harvard), the 1st edition at 2 institutions (LoC, UAE Department of Culture and Tourism), and an undefined edition dated 1980 at 1 location (Mohammed bin Rashid Library, Dubai). Not recorded on Library Hub.

Publisher's illustrated card wrappers, a little worn, pink errata slip and party map loosely inserted. 288pp. Beirut, Dar Lebanon Press, Spread across 235 individual sections, this is as detailed as map of Kuwait as one could hope for.…In the introduction, Hamad M. Sa'idan writes: "Kuwait with its progressive towards modernisation is badly in need of a directory for its cities and roads. It is in fact a necessity for organization and keeping abreast of more advanced countries which are few in number . As regards its contents this road and street directory is probably the first of its kind to be compiled in our area, or for that matter, in the third world." While the latter claim is doubtful, this is certainly the first street directory for Kuwait. OCLC locates copies at LoC and Abu Dhabi's department of culture and tourism. A later edition (1981) is recorded at Harvard.
