In 1785, a year after Johnson's death, Reverend George Strahan, D.D., published a posthumous volume of writings given to him by Johnson, which he named Prayers and Meditations. These were the private religious meditations of a very public man of letters, and it is unclear whether Johnson intended publication. This edition from 1902 contains an introductory note (which follows the text) and a number of notes, some of which include biographical information about Johnson and his mental state at the time of writing.
