Paperback. Condizione: Good. Among the greatest names in Roman--and European--poetry has always been that of Horace. Through all the centuries since his death in 8 B.C., his superb poetic craftsmanship has remained unassailable. Yet the full range and depth of his humanity continue to prove curiously elusive, especially for the nonspecialist reader to whom above all this book is directed. In the days when Latin was generally read, Horace was too often seen as the poet of establishments, whether the establishment involved was the imperial Roman court, the aristocracy of Augustan England, or the nineteenth-century educational system, and something of that reputation has lingered on even into our own day. To see him thus is the entire aim of David Armstrong's new study. From it emerges not just the illustrious master (famous, calm, and dead) in the arts of lyric and satiric poetry, but the freedman's son who struggled through the terrible upheavals of the collapsing Roman Republic to become, by sheer force of genius, a member of the brilliant circle surrounding the Emperor Augustus. To the very end of that adventurous career on the fringes of power, Horace retained an extraordinary candor, independence, and common sense. It is as the ultimate critic and connoisseur, not merely of literature but also of love and life itself, that he surveys the Augustan scene: the tragicomedy of bisexual politics in the demi-monde, the pretentious fashions of middle-class dinner parties, the pomposity of jurists and philosophers, the idiocies of the literati, and not least the grandeur and terror of a novel political entity--an empire almost coextensive with the known world. The poetry thus restored to life proves to be a poetry for all thinking and feeling people.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. Indiana, a young woman stuck in a loveless marriage, is seduced by a charming neighbor who is not as polished and pure as he appears. She embarks on a journey to find real love, leading to an unexpected discovery about the object of her affection. Indiana is a young woman from French Louisiana who's married to the much older Colonel Delmare. Their union is strict and often oppressive, leaving her unfulfilled. Indiana shares their home with her cousin Ralph and her loyal maid, Noun. One evening they encounter a handsome young man, Raymon de Ramière, who becomes interested in Indiana. Yet, prior to their meeting, Raymon had already seduced Noun who is pregnant with his child. This complicated dynamic forces Indiana to decide what she really wants: passion or stability? Indiana is a bold commentary on the institution of marriage in France. It examines the implied gender roles and responsibilities pushed upon women. Sand champions the need for passion and true love, regardless of social convention. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Indiana is both modern and readable. Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission. Each and every Mint Edition title gets a fresh, professionally typeset manuscript and a dazzling new cover, all while maintaining the integrity of the original book. With thousands of titles in our collection, we aim to spotlight diverse public domain works to help them find modern audiences. Mint Editions celebrates a breadth of literary works, curated from both canonical and overlooked classics from writers around the globe.…

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. CONSUELO: A Romance of Venice (1842-1843) by George Sand is a glorious story of true love, a paean to music and the creative power of art, and a personal crossroads of choices. Consuelo, a plain young woman with a divine operatic voice and a heart of sterling integrity, rises from her lowly zingarella (gypsy) beginnings to become a prima donna in Venice and in several courts of Europe, bewitching all with her uncompromising artistic excellence and her profound interpretation of music. At the same time romantic choices are laid before her in the shape of a beautiful but frivolous comrade of childhood, a loyal friend and fellow adventurer, a mysterious holy madman who may also be a saint and her one true love, and finally, a king. And yet, every artist must chose the nature of their personal fulfillment, and Consuelo's life path appears to be ever-dissonant with ecstasy and sorrow, duty and joie de vivre, love and sacrifice. What will the pure-hearted zingarella choose? Great historical composers and other personages make delightful and surprising appearances all throughout this emotionally intense and exalted novel, often verging on the realm of the supernatural, and considered by many to be George Sand's masterpiece.…
