Hardcover. Condizione: Good. First Edition. In 1918, August Sander meticulously photographed the defeated citizenry of Germany who needed photo identification cards for the occupying forces. By 1929 he had photographed all classes and types of people. During this time, Sander came under the influence of modern art and its intellectual practitioners whom he befriended in Cologne. Through his discussions with them he came to understand the importance of his portrait work and was encouraged to continue. He produced the first volume of an extended series he hoped would provide an exhaustive catalogue, but in the 1930s his work fell into disfavor and was banned by the Nazis. The photography of August Sander comprises an extraordinary human document. This volume of the Masters of Photography series, which includes 43 portraits of a cross section of German society, from pastry chefs to industrialists, is a provocative glance at the Weimar Republic.

Livre.

Condizione: New. 96 black and white photographies (complete), most of them full pages 1st Edition, 1982 (Erste Ausgabe) Book condition, Etat : Très Bon hardcover, editor's brown printed binding, illustrated by 2 black and white photographies small In-4 1 vol. - 112 pages Contents, Chapitres : Alfred Doblin : Von Gesichtern, Bildern und ihrer Wahrheit - Dr. Heinz Frotscher : Porträtsgestalten und Bildstill des August Sander - Biografische Zeittafel (Chronologie) - August Sander, né le 17 novembre 1876 à Herdorf, (Rhénanie-Palatinat) et mort le 20 avril 1964 à Cologne, est un photographe allemand. Paperback. Condizione: Fine. 1st. 143 pages, illustrations; 20 cm. In Focus Series. Tight, clean copy. "The long life of German photographer August Sander (1876-1964) spanned one of the most turbulent eras in his country's history. The Great War of 1914-1918, the Weimar Republic, the reign of National Socialism, and the horrors of World War II all left an indelible imprint on both the man and his work. Sander, a conventional studio portraitist who transformed himself into an avant-gardist, exemplified the complex and sometimes contradictory nature of his time. He was at once innovative and deeply wedded to the past, blending a progressive vision with a traditional view of society and his craft. The approximately fifty plates featured in In Focus: August Sander are some of the most striking from the Getty Museum's more than twelve hundred pictures by the artist. They include images of rural dwellers such as those found in Young Farmers and Farm Girls, and other portraits including Wife of the Cologne Painter Peter Abelen, Parliamentarianand the poignant Blind Children, D|ren. A chronological overview of Sander's life provides a factual framework for this discussion." - Publisher. Size: 8vo. Collectible.
