Prima edizione
Trade Paperback. Condizione: As New. First Edition. 286 pages. The Brazos River meanders 923 miles from the Texas Panhandle to the Gulf of Mexico, crossing the High Plains, the West Texas Lower Rolling Plains, the Western Cross Timbers, the Grand Prairie, and the Gulf Coastal Plain.Journalist Jon McConal has spent many hours hiking the river's banks and camping out on its sandbars, discovering the many bridges that cross the river, and studying maps and tracing the river's route. His friend Eddie Lane has canoed and camped the Brazos, even retracing the canoe journey made famous by John Graves in Goodbye to a River. The two drove more than four thousand miles to look at sixty-two bridges ranging from a private bridge made from oilfield pipe to modern concrete structures. They stood on the bridges and watched the river, sometimes loaded with trash, sometimes serene and gentle. They met the people who lived near the bridges, heard their stories, and ate in local cafés.This is the story of two men with a love of the outdoors and the Brazos River and the people they met along their journey. They hope readers, too, will want to take a few day trips and explore the Brazos and its bridges.

Aggiungi al carrelloBuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - In 1934, the year Calvin Littlejohn came to Fort Worth, the city was a sleepy little burg. This was the Jim Crow era, when mainstream newspapers wouldn't publish pictures of black citizens and white photographers wouldn't take pictures in black schools. In Fort Worth, Littlejohn began what would become a life-long career of documenting the black community. And there would be nothing remotely related to the white culture's depictions of Amos 'n' Andy or black kids grinning over a slice of watermelon in Littlejohn's portrayal of his adopted home and the people he came to appreciate and love. Littlejohn's natural aptitude for drawing had been honed by correspondence courses in graphic design and a stint in a photo shop where he learned about the camera, lighting, and the use of shadows. When Littlejohn was assigned to be the official photographer at I. M. Terrell - the city's only black high school at the time - his professional career was launched. Unlike many segregated cities, where blacks lived only in one section, blacks in Cowtown lived in every quadrant of the city. There was a thriving black business district, with hotels, restaurants, a movie theater, a bank, and a major hospital, pharmacy, and nursing school. And of course, there were the schools and churches. All would eventually be seen through Littlejohn's lens. Although he never set out to be the documentarian of Fort Worth's black community, he did what he set out to do: to capture the best of a community, focusing on its good times. This book features more than 150 shots Littlejohn captured over the course of his career.

Softcover. Condizione: Very Good. Magazine. Cover by Paolo Lionni. [36]pp. Single sheets printed both sides and secured with two staples. The paper makes this issue particularly susceptible to toning. Very good with lower staple pull, typical toning, tiny nicks and tears, and a few small stains, without mailing address or stamps. An influential mimeograph created by di Prima and LeRoi Jones featuring some of the most important poets of the 20th Century. Unlike other magazines, this so-called "newsletter" was distributed via a mailing list, many of which were noted poets, journalists, critics, publishers and artists. For this reason, most copies were hand addressed or affixed with a mailing label and stamp, and folded for mailing. This issue guest edited by John Wieners and features contributions from di Prima, Jack Spicer, B.
