Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The Porphyry Novels: Book One"Gripping and powerful right from the first page." Peter Tonkin, author of Caesar's Spies1453.After a thousand years, the sun is setting on the Eastern Roman Empire. As a great Ottoman army prepares to strike Constantinople, John Grant is among the mercenaries flocking to the city's defence.Scottish, world-weary and repentant, Grant hopes holy war can bring absolution for a dark past. He soon finds that the cannons and scimitars of the invaders beyond the crumbling walls might prove less lethal than the dangers lurking within them: a Genoese general with a hidden agenda, a firebrand monk with the mob in his thrall, a murderer with a taste for the theatrical. And although Grant has the requisite strength and skills to overcome all of these, in Anna Notaras, the beautiful but monstrously ambitious daughter of Byzantium's richest family, he might have met his match. As the siege reaches its bloody culmination, what can be salvaged, what must be sacrificed to the cataclysmic fires? Recommended for fans of Dorothy Dunnett, Bernard Cornwell and Ben Kane. Porphyry and Ash is the first in a new series set during the Ottoman conquests of the 15th century.Peter Sandham is the author of a series of historical novels set in the second half of the 15th century charting the fall of Constantinople and subsequent geopolitical turmoil through the eyes of Byzantine Greek, Venetian and Ottoman protagonists.Praise for Peter Sandham: "Porphyry and Ash is an accomplished and intelligent feat of historical storytelling. In charting the fall of the Eastern Roman Empire in Constantinople to the Ottoman Turks, Sandham has created a rich, immersive and gripping reading experience. His pov character, world weary and repentant Scottish mercenary, John Grant, provides the perfect pair of eyes through which to view the richly built and well researched world of 15th C Constantinople." J. A. Ironside, author of The King's Knight."Plunges the reader into the Byzantine snake-pit that is politics in Constantinople during the months before and during the Turkish siege and conquest of the city. Scottish mercenary John Grant, wrestling with his nightmare memories of burning Joan of Arc at the stake, must balance love and war as the enemy army gathers and the daughter of the doomed city's most powerful citizen becomes dangerously infatuated with him. Gripping and powerful right from the first page, building to an enthralling climax, Porphyry and Ash, based on the biographical records of actual characters, has all the historical weight of Harry Sidebottom's Fire in the East combined with the narrative power of Graham Shelby's Knights of Dark Renown or Alfred Duggan's Count Bohemond." Peter Tonkin, author of Caesar's Spies. This item is printed on demand. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The practical importance of turbulence led the U.K. Royal Academy of Engineering to launch an Initiative on Turbulence, the most important outcome of which was the definition and agreement of the 1999 Newton Institute Research Programme on Turbulence. The main aim of the- month programme, held at the institute in Cambridge, was to bring together the mathematics and engineering communities involved in the turbulence area to address the many problems and to map out future strategy. As a part of the Research Programme, a Symposium on Direct and Large-Eddy Simulation was jointly organised with ERCOFfAC through their Large-Eddy Simulation Interest Group and took place in May 1999. Two previous ERCOFf AC Workshops had already taken place on these closely related varieties of turbulence simulation, at The University of Surrey in 1994 and at Universite Joseph Fourier, Grenoble in 1996. The Symposium at Cambridge was therefore the third in the ERCOFTAC series, enhanced by the presence of leading figures in the field from Europe and the USA who were resident at INI for that period of the Research Programme. Professors M. Germano, A. Leonard, J. Jimenez, R. Kerr and S. Sarkar gave the invited lectures, text versions of which will be found in this volume. As occurred at the previous two ERCOFT AC workshops, there were almost one hundred participants mostly from Europe but including some from Japan and the USA, including on this occasion resident scientists of the INI Research Programme.

Aggiungi al carrelloSee the two men's entries in the Oxford DNB. The material is in good condition, lightly aged, except that the envelopes of the first two items are somewhat worn and grubby. ONE: TLS to Douglas C. Dorrington. 1p, 12mo. The address to 'Dear Mr. Dorrington' and signature 'Peter Pears' are in autograph; the rest is typed. Written while Britten is dying. Reads: 'Benjamin Britten wishes me to thank you for your kind message. He hopes you will understand that it is not possible for him to answer you himself.' In envelope with Saxmundham postmark dated 22 November 1976, addressed in Pears's autograph to 'Douglas C Dorrington Esq / 9 Chatsworth Rd / Croydon / Surrey'. The envelope is annotated in another hand: 'B. B. died 4/12/76'. TWO: TLS to 'Ray Seaton'. 1p, 12mo. No more than a note really. Written after Britten's death. Reads as follows, with typed section in square brackets and the rest in autograph: 'Dear Ray Seaton / [Thank you very much indeed for your most kind message.] which I much appreciated / Sincerely / Peter Pears'. No place or date, but in envelope with Saxmundham postmark dated 15 December 1976 and typed address to 'Mr. R. P. Seaton, / 28 Hollybush Street, / PLAISTOW, / LONDON E.13.' THREE: Printed programme. Headed: 'The Stone Gallery, The Vyne, nr. Basingstoke / (by kind permission of The National Trust and The Hon. Antony Lyttelton) / Peter Pears / Benjamin Britten / A Concert in aid of the Sandham Memorial Chapel, Burghclere'. Dated on cover 'Sunday, April 20, 1958, at 3.0 p.m.' 4pp, 8vo. Bifolium. Cover in grey with some red lettering. Illustration on cover of 'The Resurrection (Sandham Memorial Chapel) by Stanley Spencer'. The reverse of the first leaf carries the programme, the recto of the second a paragraph about the chapel itself, the reverse of the second leaf the names of the 'patrons of the concert', committee and management. Loosely inserted is a stapled pamphlet (8pp, 12mo), with drophead heading 'Peter Pears / Benjamin Britten / Text of the Songs'. Entirely composed of texts of 22 songs, some in German and French, with the last four 'arr. BENJAMIN BRITTEN'. Also present is an envelope (only), with stamps and Saxmundham postmark of 20 July 1976, addressed to 'GEORGE BEHREND / FLIQUET, / JERSEY, / CHANNEL ISLES.' Not in Pears's elegant hand, and with a distinctive capital 'Q' (dead vertical downstroke). Whether written out by Britten or not is unclear, but annotated in another hand 'Last letter of any sort from Ben on becoming Lord Britten.' I stress that there is no letter surviving. See Image. Could the annotation be by a grief-stricken Peter Pears?
