In 2015, Sandra Ratkovic went to Moscow for the first time - the result is a cycle of absurd, colorful, disturbing, and touching photographs. The tragi-comical color, photographs show a contrasting Moscow: the omnipresent militäry and the ubiquitous Putin cult meet kitsch and folklore. Insignia of globalization can be found next to Orthodox churches, which almost disappear amid gas stations and grey apartment blocks. In documentary style, yet at the same time tongue-in-cheek, this photography book draws a portrait of everyday life in this post-Soviet nation as a potpourri of pop-patriotism, tradition, and modernism. Photographer Sandra Ratkoviv *1980 in Frankfurt am main) became curious about Russia and its culture today whilst documenting abandoned military airports, barracks, and other leftovers of the old Soviet regime in Berlin and its surroundings. So she decided to travel to Moscow. With an essay by Wladimir Kaminer. To do so does not require any exoticism on her part, but a close look at everyday culture and its contradictions. That is why her most recent projects did not lead the German photographer to far-distant lands, but to a country that has become a stranger to itself. In England, Brexit divides minds, the economy, and politics, and leaves everyone looking at an uncertain future. In Merseyside, her detailed shots elicit a portrait of a country where serious patriotism and kitsch permeate each other. The less they are differentiated, the stronger the feeling of inner conflict there is underlying them. That these photographs are at the same time replete with sensitivity toward the people shown is what makes Ratkovic's subtle art so special.SANDRA RATKOVIC (\*1980, Frankfurt am Main) studied art history and fine arts photography. Her works are shown in numerous international exhibitions. She uses the camera for documentary shots that point out the bizarre and paradoxical in everyday life. Ratkovic lives and works in Berlin. 88 pp. Englisch.
