Hardcover. Condizione: fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: very good. First edition. First edition (no statement as is correct). Hardcover. Introduction by Bing Crosby. 305 pp. with index and appendix listing of all members of both bands through the years. Profusely illustrated with vintage photos and reproductions. Fine (tasteful bookplate on front pastedown hidden by the jacket flap) in bright, very good dust jacket. A joint biography of the two brothers who were musical giants in the golden big band era, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey. Author Herb Sanford was uniquely qualified to write the tale as he first met the brothers in 1925 and became thier good friens---they clubbed around together during the Jazzz Age, broke into big time radio in the thirties, and introduced them as key sidemen in studio orchestras in Hollywood. He literally lived with Tommy and the band for three years.

Hardcover. Condizione: As New. Condizione sovraccoperta: As New. Photographs (illustratore). 1st Edition. In the 1950s television burst upon the entertainment world, a fledgling medium of unknown potential. This book tells the inside story of those early years of TV, when all shows were live (no retakes!), when history was made, stars were born, and America's leisure time was revolutionized. Herb Sanford, producer of the first Garry Moore show, gives readers a delicious behind-the-scenes view of the crazy happenings and historic firsts that characterized live television. Nostalgia? Sure. Laughs? You bet. But above all he shares the excitement of the talented group who for eight years braved uncharted territory-with unforgettable success. This book recaptures those magic moments when Carol Burnett, Don Knotts, Jonathan Winters, and other giants of today's television world were introduced to the viewing public; when a woman in Michigan received $10,000 in nickels-tax free-just for being a nice person; when a family in Cleveland won Durward Kirby for a weekend in a giveaway contest. It tells what went into the preparation of the shows (how do you get ready for a couple of visiting water buffaloes?); how guests were booked; how scripts were written; how offbeat ideas were pursued; how the staff managed to find enough material for five hours a week of live programming. Ladies and Gentlemen, The Garry Moore Show is a viewer's delight, a treasure trove of fun-filled reminiscences, highlighted with dozens of photographs. As Garry Moore says in his introduction, 'the laughs were many and our loyalties fierce. And it was the best television there ever was, because the audience was not an audience but fellow passengers sharing with us the wonder of it all.' HERB SANFORD has been in show business for most of his life. A graduate of Princeton University, where he was president of the Triangle Club, he later became a radio producer-director in advertising. In 1949 he joined CBS-TV as producer of the first Garry Moore Show. Book.

"Herb Sanford unravels the Dorsey's complex relationship in a biography he is uniquely qualified to write. He got to know the Dorseys in 1925, soon became their good friend. This biography of the fabulous Dorseys is also something more. It is a portrait of a great era in American music and American life. Tommy and Jimmy came on the music scene just when the big bands were taking on a shape that would define the music of a whole generation. In an age of musical giants, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey commanded the peaks. They welded jazz and popular music, and gave distinction to both. In the twilight of the Big Band Era, the stars began to flicker. Glen Miller went first. Then the others: Artie Shaw, Paul Whiteman, Jimmie Lunceford, Claude Thornhill, Sammy Kaye, Glen Gray, Cab Calloway, Charlie Barnett, Eddy Duchin, Gene Krupa - some retired, some dead. Tommy and Jimmy held out longer than most. When they went, an era died with them." JAZZ 1 ** ! Language: eng.
