Two authors have written eight SHORT stories about the merits and bravery of boys in the scouting movement. 96 pages with b/w decorative drawings interspersed. Stories are set in German East Africa, Scotland, England and Canada. One story talks about the Great War. Adventure icludes tracking criminals, rescuing a child from a fire and scouting out enemy positions. Cond : Issued w/o dust jacket (??)). Pictorial boards show a scoutmaster and 3 scouts of different ranks around a campfire. The scoutmaster is kilted. Spine and back cover are also pictorial. Spine fine but edges chipped. Two back corners are very soft. Light soiling throughout. Binding is VG but split at p. 32. Two large scuffs on back cover. P/O inscr. on verso front cover. No marks, creases, stains, folds, nor tears. Almost giftable !! Quote (p. 14) : " . wriggled flat on his stomach across the open to where the mast stood. In a second his clasp-knife was out and open. Wijsgeer Jeroen Buve, die dit jaar 80 wordt, heeft een bewogen leven achter de rug. Achterin dit boek, dat hij een leuk-brutale ondertitel heeft meegeven, vinden we zijn biografie. Zijn wortels heeft hij in de katholieke Kerk, waar hij inmiddels kritisch, maar niet afwijzend tegenover staat. In 1954 werd hij monnik in Chevetogne, gelijktijdig met Philippe Bär. Van daaruit werd hij naar Maria Laach gestuurd waar hij hoorndol werd van de neoscholastiek. In Leuven kreeg hij naar eigen zeggen pas echte filosofische vorming. Hij was er studiegenoot van Adelbert Denaux en André Léonard. Later stak Buve zijn licht op bij mensen als Carl Schmitt, Alexandre Kojeve en Robert Spaemann: indrukwekkend als je die tot je kennissen mag rekenen. In 1969 trad Buve uit de orde en trouwde. Inmiddels is hij met zijn zoons oprichter van de Geert Groote Universiteit van Deventer, een embryonale universiteit rond de indrukwekkende bibliotheek van prof. Koos de Valk. In Buves denken staat de veritas duplex centraal. Niet schrikken, er is geen nieuwe Siger van Brabant opgestaan. Met deze 'dubbele waarheid' kan iedereen zijn voordeel doen. Het is het verschil tussen Aristoteles en Plato, tussen Verstand en Vernunft, tussen ratio en (gezond) verstand, tussen voorstelbare en onvoorstelbare, alleen via intuïtie ('inzicht') te bereiken werkelijkheid. We leven echter in een aristotelische wereld, waarin het wiskundig beschrijven van een aldus manipuleerbaar gemaakte werkelijkheid centraal staat en als exclusief 'wetenschappelijk' geldt. Wat werkt, is waar. Maar in hoeverre is dat het wezen van de zaak? Daarvoor moeten we bij de metafysica van Plato zijn, betoogt Buve, en net als in Plato in het Vaticaan (2012) laat hij dat zien met een reeks van actuele voorbeelden. Zo is de tegenstelling tussen alternatieve en reguliere geneeskunde er mee te overbruggen (al hou je natuurlijk ook echte kwakzalverij). Maar ook in de democratische politiek ziet Buve een missie voor zijn dubbele waarheid. In een appendix gaat Buve in op het controversiële Mind & Cosmos van Thomas Nagel. Deze atheïstische denker meent dat Darwins evolutietheorie 'vrijwel zeker fout' is en dat aan doelgerichtheid in de natuur niet valt te ontkomen. Buve analyseert Nagels betoog vanuit de duplex veritas. Nog interessanter is eigenlijk dat Nagel de evolutietheorie vanuit een puur aristotelisch paradigma al onhoudbaar vindt. Overigens vind ik Buves betoog dat Aristoteles in zijn opvatting van 'vorm' noodgedwongen platonisch 'gesjoemeld' heeft zeer scherpzinnig.
