Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book reveals the medieval history of a key figure of the Investiture Controversy, Cardinal Bishop Kuno of Palestrina. When the struggle between the papacy and the Holy Roman Empire over control of church appointments flared anew at the beginning of the 12th century, Kuno took a prominent role, and this study charts the full arc of his involvement. It draws back the curtain on Kuno's life before his elevation to Cardinal, then examines how his personal animosity towards the Emperor Henry V motivated his subsequent actions. It goes on to detail Kuno's legations to France and to Jerusalem, analysing the wider context into which his ambitions and papal diplomacy fit, and how they shaped events. Rich in source material, this book will appeal not only to students of the Investiture Controversy, but to anyone interested in the relationship between church and state during the Middle Ages. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good+. First Edition. 8vo; x, 360 pages; Contemporary binding: black morocco spine over plum brown pebbled cloth. Spine lettered in gilt. A lovely copy, with the title page handsomely set in red and black. Just a touch of rubbing and light wear to the edges of the spine. The author was born in Halle am Salle in March, 1831. His father was a "polisher." In his youth, Gustav Schoene was deemed too weak to pursue a life in the trades. Fortunately, his aptitude for scholarship opened another path. He acquired a doctorate from Halle-Wittenberg University -- his dissertation: 'De Maiorum-Domus potestate : dissertatio inauguralis historica.' was published in his native city in 1855. He was drawn to Berlin, but found both the competition with other students similarly engaged in Carolingian studies under the great Ranke, and his lack of funds distracting. He withdrew to the city of Elberfeld (now part of Wuppertal), where he died after a decade of ceaseless scholarly work. Dr. Schoene's demise arrived suddenly, in the early days of 1869, having dressed for the class he was intending to teach). The present work is a major scholarly source and study of the Sæmundar Edda. Anglophones often refer to this as the "Poetic Edda," also known as the Elder Edda -- a collection of Old Norse poems from the Icelandic medieval manuscript Codex Regius Along with the Prose Edda, the Poetic Edda is the most expansive source on Norse mythology. See OCLC Number 6654837. Also, see OCLC Number / Unique Identifier: 504133684 -- As is often the case, the British Library has generated a separate number for its copy. Now quite scarce in commerca. Usefully for modern readers and scholars, this German text is set throughout in clear, Roman types. (Fraktur, or Black letter, is reserved for sectional titles, only). There is a pencil note on the rear paste down of this handsomely preserved volume: "From Karl Knortz Library (dated 1/5/20). This refers to the German-American writer Karl Knortz -- born in Garbenheim, Germany in 1841, who emigrated to the United States in 1863. Today, he is best remembered for his association with Walt Whitman. He began corresponding with Walt Whitman in about 1882. In that same year, Knortz wrote a lengthy essay on Whitman for a German-American newspaper which later appeared, in an extended version, as a monograph both in the United States (1886) and in Germany (1899). Knortz was coauthor, with Thomas William Hazen Rolleston, of the first book-length translation of Whitman's poetry. Knortz had convinced his Swiss publisher to issue this translation of 'Leaves of Grass' -- ('Grashalme: Gedichte.' Trans. Karl Knortz and T.W. Rolleston. Zurich: Schabelitz, 1889). Whitman is prominently featured in Knortz' history of North American literature published in Germany in 1891. Whitman scholars are still mulling over Knortz' last word on this subject -- 'Walt Whitman und seine Nachahmer: Ein Beitrag zur Literatur der Edelurninge.' (Leipzig: Heichen, 1911). Knortz conceived a category of Whitman and a few of his followers as "noble" homosexuals, by which distinction, ("Edel Urninge,") he evidently meant to say, sexually inactive. The perception of this 1911 book may also have been colored by Knortz's left-leaning economic ideas. Knortz died in 1918. …
