Bei Birkleyn tritt einer der westlichen Quellarme des Tigris aus dem Taurus an die Oberfläche, nachdem er zuvor etwa 1 km durch einen natürlichen Tunnel geflossen ist. Diese geographische Situation charakterisiert den Ort als etwas Besonders im Vorderen Orient und macht ihn in vielen Epochen zu einem mythischen Anziehungspunkt. Diese Stelle galt unter anderem den Assyrern als eigentliche Quelle des Tigris und kann mit großer Wahrscheinlichkeit als Ort eines Naturheiligtums interpretiert werden. Die Bedeutung des Ortes zeigt sich insbesondere daran, dass zwei assyrische Herrscher des 12. bzw. 9. Jahrhunderts v. Chr. hier Inschriften und Felsreliefs hinterlassen haben.
