Hard Back. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: No Dust Jacket. First Printing Stated. 246 Pages. Tan cloth with white lettering to the spine and impressed into the front board the author's last name. Laid in (pasted) are two clippings. One with his photograph that appears to be somewhat of an obituary. The other clipping is a short description of the present book. In and out of these essays wanders The Man with the Calabash Pipe, a sardonic bachelor who refused to light his heater since a likeable mouse is in residence underneath it. His aged friend the Horned Husband Kachina Chief is another recurring character, a walking embodiment of an Indian sense of humor. But the important person is Oliver La Farge himself, talking as if with a friend about the things that concern him most. Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. Boards (HB) in near fine condition with light foxing to side page edges. Dust jacket in very good condition with slight surface wear, 2 small tape residue lines and price clipped. Foreword by Merle Armitage, who also designed this book and its jacket. Between 1951 and 1966 the distinguished American poet Winfield Townley Scott kept a series of notebooks in which he set down his thoughts on poetry, literature, the literary scene, and life in general. Shortly before his untimely death in 1968 he made a selection of the entries he thought were best and gave it the title "a dirty hand." These perceptive notes, some tart, some gentle, some boisterous, some wistful, give us a remarkable insight into the workings of his creative mind. George P. Elliott has said of Scott: "In a very solid way, I think he was as rock-bottom American a poet as we have had since Frost." The introduction is by Scott's good friend Merle Armitage, who also designed the original edition of this book. 160 pages with index.
