"To understand the complex picture of poverty and the ways of addressing the issue poses a difficult challenge to development. This book is about the lives and livelihoods of the poor people of rural Bangladesh. It draws upon the stories they have narrated to a group of researchers over a period of three years. The project aims to understand their livelihood constraints, opportunities and identify key components to help implement development policies and strategies for targeting and reaching out to the poorest. The book also helps to understand the causes of poverty. Drawing on a conceptual framework based on the livelihoods approach and taking a structured and holistic view of the problem, the contributors attempt to look beyond material poverty. They seek to understand how it 'feels' to be poor. The particular constraint faced by women and adolescent girls are the focus of two chapters in the book. In their recommendations, the contributors take into account that 'livelihood' is not only constructed of material assets but also from cultural values and identities. The book calls for more attention to be paid to the many ways in which the poorest make a living, so that various programmes for poverty alleviations are responsive to what people do or want to do." In recent years the term social protection has gained currency in developmental discourse encompassing the range of protective transfers services and formal and informal safeguards that are available to protect people in need or at risk of being in need. Whilst migration offers a safety net for poorer people in search of alternative or supplementary livelihoods it also deprives many of access to formal and informal sources of support. Social protection concerns emerge at all states of migration before departure in transit at destination and upon return. It impinges on internal and international migrants irrespective of their status (regular or irregular) and also on members of their families. The papers in this volume deals with several sub themes. They include measures and services that migrants miss out when they move from one place the kinds of informal measures that members of their families take in their absence the kinds of measures that migrants take themselves in securing social protection at the place of destination and the role of the state and non government sectors in providing such protection both at places of origin and destination. The volume presents a number essays based on empirical research conducted in Bangladesh and India. The sub themes discussed in the essays also look closely at the subject of female migration which indeed is a cause of current concern especially with regard to social protection issues of rural migrants in Bangladesh. The volume addresses questions such as how much social protection do vulnerable migrant workers and those they leave behind receive from the state and other formal agencies. The book should provide answers to questions frequently asked by scholars students development partners who wish to see an integrated social protection strategy for migrants. 236 pp.

Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. With the development of effective antiretroviral therapies (ART) in the mid-1990s, HIV became a treatable although serious condition, and people who are adherent to HIV medications can attain normal or near-normal life expectancies. Because of the success of ART, people 50 and older now make up a majority of people with HIV in high-income countries and other places where ART is accessible. The aging of the HIV epidemic is a global trend that is also being observed in low- and middle-income countries, including countries in sub-Saharan Africa, where the greatest number of older people with HIV reside (3.7 million). While globally over half of older adults with HIV are in sub-Saharan Africa, we have little information about the circumstances, needs, and resiliencies of this population, which limits our ability to craft effective policy and programmatic responses to aging with HIV in this region. At present, our understanding of HIV and aging is dominated by information from theU.S. and Western Europe, where the epidemiology of HIV and the infrastructure to provide social care are markedly different than in sub-Saharan Africa. Aging with HIV in Sub-Saharan Africa addresses this gap in our knowledge by providing current research and perspectives on a range of health and psychosocial topics concerning these older adults from across this region. This volume provides a unique and timely overview of growing older with HIV in a sub-Saharan African context, covering such topics as epidemiology, health and functioning, and social support, as well as policy and program implications to support those growing older with HIV.There are very few published volumes that address HIV and aging, and this is the first book to consider HIV and aging in sub-Saharan Africa. Most publications in this area focus on HIV and aging in Uganda and South Africa. This volume broadens the scope with contributions from authors working in West Africa, Botswana, and Kenya. The range of topics covered here will be useful to professionals in a range of disciplines including psychology, epidemiology, gerontology, sociology, health care, public health, and social work.
