Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. A law student at Dhaka University, Afsana's future is bright. Her greatest concern is whether or not her parents will approve of her marriage. When they do, the young bride knows she can face anything the future holds. Then war breaks out.Six years later, she encounters a ghost from her past-her first husband, presumed dead in the fighting. My War, My Child vividly and compassionately tells the story of Bengali birangona, the war heroines, whose lives were brutally torn apart by the 1971 War for Independence. Though the fight resulted in the freedom and independent nation so craved by the Bengali people, hundreds of thousands of women's lives were devastated, leaving them to scrape together the pieces and carry on as best they could-often with children and orphans forced upon them. This is a piece of history you've never heard before, an inside look at the resilience and strength of women around the world.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. In this book Dipali Sen presents a variety of Indian recipes while recollecting many incidents from her life, especially the idyllic years she spent as a little girl with her grandparents in the sleepy town of Bogra, now in Bangladesh. For her, food is associated with the most exciting history, the most colorful customs, and the most fascinating personal reminiscences. She tells how her great grandfather was paraded about on an elephant when he graduated from Dacca University, and how in later life he developed an interest in dancing girls. There are also stories about a grandmother who battled snakes, an untouchable friend, a floating palace, a pet peacock with a dazzling display of feathers, and a dangerous encounter with a cobra that she barely survived with the help of two gun-bearing relatives, all of which are associated with easy-to-follow recipes. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in food, elephants, cobras, and the mysterious Indian subcontinent.…

Hardback. Condizione: Very Good. With one immigrant's story, two authors analyze America's immigration system and suggest better, more human policies. The Accidental American calls for a bold new approach to immigration: a free international flow of labor to match globalization's free flow of capital. After all, corporations are encouraged to move anywhere in the world they can maximize their earnings. People shouldn't have to risk exploitation, abuse, and even imprisonment when they try to do the same. Activist, journalist, and immigration expert Rinku Sen and organizer Fekkak Mamdouh examine the consequences of this injustice through Mamdouh's own story. Born in Morocco, he was a waiter and union leader at Windows on the World, a restaurant in the World Trade Center. In the aftermath of September 11th, facing a rising tide of anti-immigrant bias, Mamdouh and others formed the Restaurant Opportunities Center of New York (ROC-NY) to help their colleagues fight for decent jobs and fair treatment. ROC-NY was able to unite native-born and immigrant workers, helping each group realize they were involved in a common struggle for better working conditions. The organization has since expanded nationwide. Since 9/11, immigrants have increasingly been treated as presumptive criminals. As a counterpoint to these regressive, fundamentally un-American practices, the authors forcefully advocate more humane policies that would ease rather than restrict people's movements, coupled with proposals for reforming globalization so that both sending and receiving countries can more equitably benefit from a more mobile international labor force. Immigrants enthusiastically contribute much more to our country than their labor. They ought to be welcomed, not marginalized. Citizenship should ultimately be determined by how willing people are to become a part of the social, civic, and political fabric of the country they live in, not by an accident of birth. "The Accidental American gives us the context, story and analysis we need for a just immigration policy. It is a must-read." -Danny Glover, actor and activist "If you have ever had to struggle as an outsider or a newcomer (and all of us have), this book will touch your heart. It is a poignant story that points the way forward for us all." -Van Jones, President and Founder, Green for All, and author of The Green Collar Economy "This book vividly highlights a seldom-mentioned side of recent immigrants' experience: their willingness to struggle for better working conditions for workers of all ethnicities in their adopted nation." -Barbara Ehrenreich, author of Nickel and Dimed, Bait and Switch, and Dancing in the Streets.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. Victor Mair and Tansen Sen have provided an account of China's engagement with the Eurasian world around it that is succinct, accessible, and masterful. They demonstrate how--from their Neolithic origins through Zheng He's fifteenth century voyages across maritime Asia--the Chinese were constantly interacting with their neighbors, through warfare, diplomacy, religious pilgrimages, trade, the accounts of travelers, and the translation of foreign books. These interactions, which are treated both topically and chronologically, are interwoven with a historical narrative and handsomely supported by illustrations, maps, translated travel accounts, and a glossary. This is a valuable addition to the literature on Chinese history in a global context.…

Hardback. Condizione: Fair. By the winner of the 1988 Nobel Prize in Economics, an essential and paradigm-altering framework for understanding economic development--for both rich and poor--in the twenty-first century. Freedom, Sen argues, is both the end and most efficient means of sustaining economic life and the key to securing the general welfare of the world's entire population. Releasing the idea of individual freedom from association with any particular historical, intellectual, political, or religious tradition, Sen clearly demonstrates its current applicability and possibilities. In the new global economy, where, despite unprecedented increases in overall opulence, the contemporary world denies elementary freedoms to vast numbers--perhaps even the majority of people--he concludes, it is still possible to practically and optimistically restain a sense of social accountability. Development as Freedom is essential reading.…
