Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. First English Edition. Gift quality First US language edition published one year after the 11th edition was translated from the German (and named: Dick und Dalli und die Ponies) in 1959. Navy blue paper covered boards show sharp tips and spine ends. No names, tears or major soil seen in the crisp, tight 160pp text. Only negligible soil marks seen in the margins of a couple pages, no text or illustrations included. Includes many soft pencil drawings throughout by Princess Marie Luise of Salm. Original, un-clipped tiffany blue background cover illustrated with four ponies and a hot pink title shows one short soil mark under author's name. Spine slightly darkened with a bit of soil, but all is legible and displays very well in new mylar. An exceedingly rare book in very nice condition. Sisters Dikki and Dalli were eagerly awaiting the visit of cousin Ethelbert to their farm where tough ponies from Iceland and Shetland were bred and trained. Ethelbert - That was a real Viking name, and what fun they would have with a Viking cousin and Viking ponies! Alas, a rude shock awaited the sisters. Ethelbert was no Viking but a delicate, town-bred, dreamy boy who was terrified of draughts and hated the crude life of the farm. He scorned the rough working ponies after the sedate, sleek riding-school hacks he was used to and the sisters in their turn despised their sissy cousin. But people cannot always be judged by first appearances and this story shows how, after many adventures, exciting and absurd, the cousins' opinions of each other pass from mutual contempt and quarrels to an eventual firm friendship.
