Readily associated with movie stars, surfers and sandy beaches, California is known as a trend-setting state where lives can change overnight. But cattlemen and cowboys are still prevalent in the modern-day Golden State, which has deep roots in some of America's oldest and most prestigious ranches. It is this reflection of the Old West that David Stoecklein captures in his photography, reminding us that there is still a future for the California cowboy. Here to represent today's prosperous California cattleman are the Tejon, Coralitos, Five Dot, Estrella, Rancho Mission Viejo, Walking R, San Emigdio, Russ Ranch & Timber Company, and Salinas Rodeo, among others. Insightful essays from Henry Schacht, Shirl Woodson, and Ernie Morris complement Dave's photographs, offering historical and geographical context. This most recent leg of my journey to photograph the West was full of surprises. California is fantastically big, beautiful, and inspiring. Big ranches - the biggest just 60 miles from the Los Angeles airport - in a big state. It's a long way from Dorris, in northern California, to the Jack Ranch, down below Paso Robles. I drove the whole way, so I know. California has it all: Mountains. Beaches. Spectacular land . . . golden grass, emerald hills, oak trees, Spanish moss, majestic mountains, gritty deserts. Believe it or not, there is still much more open space than there are cities or towns. Just on the outskirts of great cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento, Carmel, and Santa Barbara, an Eden of wildlife flourishes. Like state parks or refuges, the California ranches provide buffer zones between nature and the sprawling megalopolis. The cattlemen are still working today as their ancestors did, still struggling to keep their ranches intact - fighting heavy government regulations, taxes, poor cattle prices, a lack of or an overabundance of water, and pressure from developers. Although ranching is still a big part of California business, it is changing, and changing quickly. I am thankful to have been able to preserve some snapshots of this proud time. - David R.
