He is best known for his highly praised history of the Reconstruction Era in South Carolina, that gave fair coverage to all sides, and for his widely used textbook The South, Old and New (1947) and his monographs on South Carolina history. He was a colorful if eccentric professor at a small college in Virginia. He was a leading progressive in the 1920s and 1930s regarding race relations, but became more conservative in the 1950s and 1960s. Signed by author.

Principles of Quantitative Living Systems Science, the first of a planned series of three books, begins an attempt to fulfill that prediction. Systems were described as being made up of a number of interrelated and interdependent parts, but because of the interrelations, the total system became more than the sum of those parts. These ideas led to the development of systems movements, in both Europe and the United States, that included not only biologists but scientists in other fields as well. Systems societies were formed on both continents.
