The concept of Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) was launched by FAO in 2009 which goes beyond agricultural practices and technologies to include enabling policies and institutions as well as identification of financing mechanisms to accomplish sustainable agricultural development through the integrated approach of managing landscapes to help adapt agricultural methods, livestock and crops in context of changing climatic scenarios. It has gained considerable attention, especially in developing countries, due to its potential to increase food security and farming system resilience while decreasing greenhouse gas emissions, as well as the selection of technology that will best encourage sustainable agricultural practices. Global agriculture has improved over several years, which highlight how we move forward in terms of increased crop production. Agriculture 4.0 is a term for the next big trends facing the industry, including a greater focus on precision agriculture, the internet of things (IoT), artificial intelligence, robotics and the use of big data to drive greater business efficiencies and enhance productivity in the face of rising populations and climate change.

The main focus of the present volume is to illuminate the applications of new techniques evolved in the post-genomics era. The techniques covered are high-throughput sequencing of DNA and RNA, genome editing, epigenetics and epigenomics, genotype by sequencing (GBS), QTL-seq and RNA-seq for transcriptome analysis. Vegetables are the important component of healthy diet, source of energy and hold a promising position in building up a strong immunity. Zero hunger and attaining the food and nutritional security is the top priority of United Nations development goals. Smart breeding of food and vegetable crops to fight the challenges ahead in sustainable manner by keeping the harmony with nature is an important approach to fulfill the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN-SDGs). This edited book highlights the modern results in smart vegetable breeding in the post genomics era and forecasts crucial areas of future needs. It is an important reference for the, readers, students, researchers, scientists in academia and research industries to provide them comprehensive information of innovative approaches for crop improvement in the post-genomics era and in the era of and climate change. Even the readers, academia, social activists, and others fond of reading will get a fair idea of journey travelled so far and future roadmap for fighting the challenges ahead to meet the sustainable development goals.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Modern technology for sustainable agriculture is based primarily on three platforms, namely science, innovation and spatial technologies. These are considered as the three pioneer pillars of nation building. Spatial technologies play a vital role in improving soil quality, reducing the waste of water during irrigation and sharing agricultural information with farmers. With the help of terrestrial, aquatic, and aerial sensors, satellites and surveillance equipment, a large volume of geo-spatial data from diverse sources is collected, analyzed, and utilized for smart farming and shielding of crops. During last five decades, agricultural research and extension has focused on the development of higher productivity of crop varieties, increased fertilizer use and other production technologies. These have enabled the farmers to grow more food, but at the same time it over exploited the resources and resulted in decreasing farm productivity and profitability. To tackle such problems, harmonious use of inputs through integration of various land- based enterprises and their compounded responses needs further attention to make the agriculture more productive, profitable and sustainable. Many technologies have been identified to support sustainable use of resources and facilities, including Natural Resource Management (NRM), Resource Conservation Technologies (RCTs), Integrated Farming System (IFS), Integrated Crop Management (ICM), Integrated Nutrient Management (INM), protected cultivation practices, secondary agricultural practices and post-harvest technologies.
