(Hardcover, 1913). 1913 1st edition. 8vo (145 x 223mm). Ppxii,48+ii pp ads. Blue-green cloth, spine titled in gilt. Slight use to cloth, paste repair to spine. Owner's name and browning to end-papers and edges. Good copy. Philosophy with a fishy theme, including passages on angling for pike, perch and trout. "In this essay, the unexpected result which followed the netting of certain pike is used to illustrate the value of predatory or destructive forces, both as incentives to intellectual activity during the Renaissance, and in connexion with modern social ideals." "In the 1890s Holmes was a prolific etcher. In 1909 he succeeded Lionel Cust as Director of the National Portrait Gallery. In the 19th century tradition he was a member of a dynasty of artist-bureaucrats, and was the last Director of the National Gallery (1916-1928) to combine the post with an active life as a painter. He was knighted in 1921." (National Portrait Gallery). .
