THz detection of explosives represents one of the most appealing technologies to have recently emerged in dealing with terrorist attacks encountered by civil security and military forces throughout the world. Discussed are the most advanced technologies and developments, the various points of operational strength and weaknesses as well as are suggestions and predictions the best technological solutions to overcome current operational limits. The current status of various levels of cooling in THz detectors, sources and associated electronics are also addressed. The goal was to provide a clear view on the current technologies available and the required advances needed in order to achieve more efficient systems. This goal was outlined in part by establishing the baseline of current uncertainty estimations in physics-based modelling and the identification of key areas which require additional research and development.…

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Here are presented the original results on the technology development of low-temperature synthesis (up to the room temperature) of AlN thin polycrystalline films with high thermal conductivity (Gamma = 140-180 W/m K). The essential feature of proposed technological method is the combined use of the helicon sources of low-temperature plasma and elaborated the vacuum-arc sources, which allow the formation of multicomponent functional nanostructures. The technology developed provides good AlN films adhesion to flexible polymeric Teflon and Mylar substrates and are efficient infrared (IR) blocking filters (IR 'stealth') that suppress heat flows from the warm parts of objects (T ~ 300-500 K) and block IR radiation from them but are transparent in visible, microwave and THZ spectral regions. It was shown that AlN thin layers on flexible polymeric substrates can be used as filters providing low-loss radiation transmission (t ~ 80-95 %) in the microwave and THz regions (radiation frequency ni ~ 2-270 GHz). These films are also transparent in the visible range but are blocking (up to 85% in 7-20 µm region) the IR radiation. 88 pp. Englisch.…

The fabricated AlN and MgO layers, combined with the optical properties of the polymeric substrates, form filters that effectively suppress IR radiation in the ~ 7 - 25 µm spectral range while remaining suitable for applications in the mm, sub-THz, and THz spectral regions.Several methods were applied to study AlN and MgO coatings in connection with the optimization of technological processes, as well as the structural and optical features of the deposited layers: X-ray diffraction, SEM, AFM, IR spectroscopy, sub-THz and THz transmission and reflection measurements, and Raman scattering.…
