Joyce and (Ruth) Edna Skinner, as they were in their early years, were perhaps typical of many children born into the families of the skilled artisans in the years after the First World War (The Great War). Although times were never easy - and were sometimes very hard - standards were not allowed to fall and were often based on the high moral and unsophisticated lives of forebears who, in many instances, had stemmed from country stock. Hard work was the quite unexceptional norm for many of their class but that did not prevent them and their families living full, varied and interesting lives. They set out to record it primarily for the interest of Edna's grandchildren and now for other children (and their parents) of today to see how life was lived when elbow grease was more readily available than electricity and a day at the seaside as great an adventure as perhaps today's holiday in Disneyland! The book chronicles their early lives. From thereon their paths diverged, Joyce to Academia and Edna, via early nursing (which she had to abandon due to her health), the ATS and the Civil Service, to domesticity and village life. Three daughters, the chairmanship of the Parish Council, the Women's Institute, and many other village activities have kept her 'involved' until, now 'retired', she can watch her grandchildren, of whom Claire was the first, growing up. Joyce, via Somerville college at Oxford, took a degree in history and followed it with a diploma in education. After ten years teaching in various schools she returned to a lectureship this time at Homerton College, Cambridge where she spent twelve years. Various appointments including ten years as Principal of Bishop Grosseteste College in Lincoln and six as Director of the Cambridge Institute of Education, with spells as visiting professor, or on secondment, in New York and Kenya, and membership of various learned bodies resulted in the acknowledgement of her work by the award of the CBE in 1975. On her retirement in 1984 she returned to Lincoln and is again involved in various aspects of the city's life. This book, from the pens of two such articulate ladies recalls for the generations of today and tomorrow the daily routines of lives hardly in the past yet, for many of today's young parents, so far away as to be unrecognisable. It gives a fascinating glimpse into the minutae and the momentous in the lives of very ordinary people - like4 you and me -just over half a century ago. Size: 8vo.
