Hardcover. Condizione: Used - Very Good. A landmark exploration of the engaging network of relationships among genre painters of the Dutch Golden Age The genre painting of the Dutch Golden Age between 1650 and 1675 ranks among the highest pinnacles of Western European art. The virtuosity of these works, as this book demonstrates, was achieved in part thanks to a vibrant artistic rivalry among numerous first-rate genre painters working in different cities across the Dutch Republic. They drew inspiration from each other s painting, and then tried to surpass each other in technical prowess and aesthetic appeal. The Delft master Johannes Vermeer (1632 1675) is now the most renowned of these painters of everyday life. Though he is frequently portrayed as an enigmatic figure who worked largely in isolation, the essays here reveal that Vermeer s subjects, compositions, and figure types in fact owe much to works by artists from other Dutch cities. Enlivened with 180 superb illustrations, Vermeer and the Masters of Genre Painting highlights the relationships comparative and competitive among Vermeer and his contemporaries, including Gerrit Dou, Gerard ter Borch, Jan Steen, Pieter de Hooch, Gabriel Metsu, and Frans van Mieris.' A landmark exploration of the engaging network of relationships among genre painters of the Dutch Golden Age' Open copy with light to mild wear, clean pages with tight binding, dust jacket wrapped in Brodart protector.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Rembrandts extraordinary paintings of female nudes Andromeda, Susanna, Diana and Her Nymphs, Danae, Bathsheba as well as his etchings of nude women, have fascinated many generations of art lovers and art historians, but they have also elicited vehement criticism. They were considered against-the-grain, anti-classical, even ugly and unpleasant. However, Rembrandt chose conventional subjects, keeping close to time-honored pictorial schemes, and was well aware of the high prestige accorded to the depiction of the naked female body. Why, then, do these works deviate so radically from the depictions of nude women by other artists? To answer this question the author examines Rembrandts paintings and etchings against the foil of established pictorial traditions in the Netherlands as well as Italy. Exploring Rembrandts intense dialogue with the works of predecessors and peers, the author demonstrates that, more than any other artist, it was Rembrandts purpose to incite the greatest possible empathy in the viewer. This had far-reaching consequences for the moral and erotic implications of the subjects Rembrandt chose to depict. In this richly illustrated study the author presents an innovative approach to Rembrandts views on the art of painting, his attitude towards antiquity and Italian art of the Renaissance, his sustained rivalry with the works of other artists, his handling of the moral and erotic issues inherent in subjects with female nudes, and the nature of Rembrandts artistic choices. This title was shortlisted for the Charles Rufus Morey Award of the College Art Association in 2007 First detailed study of Rembrandts fascinating depictions of female nudes Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
