(I love that the authors call this highly technical subject an "art.") The Preface goes on: "Radical changes have been made in revising this book from the first edition. As far as possible, only live matter has been retained, live subjects introduced, and old things re-cast into such form as will be more readily understood. The writers do not believe in coddling those who are too lazy to work." So there. (Regarding the possible-bookseller's label, it reads: HARPER / 2516 East 131st Street / Compton 4, California. On the rear pastedown is a penciled note, indicating that the previous owner had purchased it in 1964, using a purchase order, from a "Leila Harper." 2516 East 131st Street was and is a residential address, for what that's worth, so maybe Ms. Harper was just a previous owner rather than a bookseller.
