Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Fine condition faux red leather boards with elaborately illustrated gold front cover perimeter and spine decorations, gold front cover lettering, and gold spine lettering over a black block border. Includes Editor's Comment and Acknowledgments. Major chapter headings are as follows: Wisdom; Benjamin Franklin; History; Beauty and Business. "Sometimes it seems almost futile to try to write anything new because it has all been said before - and so well said. Of course, any such defeatism must lead to a dead end of accomplishment in terms of literary effort. Fortunately for the living and those to come, there are many bright new stars on the panel of contemporary writers. They are skillfully telling the story of these eventful days and their words will be read with relish by future generations. In fact, the printed word today is so prolific, and the competition with the book, the magazine and the newspaper is so great, future generations will require anthologies in great number to know what our bright literary stars have said. In this anthology there has bee no effort to be erudite, consistent, unusual or educational. The prime purpose is to amuse by exposing the reader to many things he has read before and may wish to read again. Perhaps that poem he [or she] HAD to learn, to pass freshman English, is here. He may even enjoy rereading it under different auspices. It is not possible to include only those things that appeal to him. If he dislikes poetry in any form, we hope he will please forgive us. Some of us like the "well-turned couplet." On the other hand, there are those who love Shakespeare, but just cannot understand how his hallowed words should appear with some of the more commonplace choices that have arrived in this selection. It takes all kinds you know - and we have tried to select all kinds of literature." - excerpt from Editor's Comment.

This English naval commander took part in several engagement of the American Revolutionary War: hewent to the relief of Acre while plenipotentiary at Constantinople and compelled Napoleon to raise siege (1799); he destroyed the Turkish fleet off Abydos (1807); in 1810 he became vice admiral and in 1821 full admiral. Unsigned integral address portion, 3 3/4" X 6", n.p., n.y. Very good. Two original faint folds visible. At center of this address portion, Smith boldly addresses it to "Messrs. Eversfield & Horne / Smith Street / Westminster." Small illegible postal cancellation at right; fragments of red wax seal still present. Not signed, but an interesting, attractive handwriting example -- and inadvertently includes his last name.

He makes strenuous representations on behalf of Dr George Roddam, hoping that Buckingham will support Roddam with the new King (William). He discusses Roddam's experience as Royal Physician to "the late King" (GeorgeIV) and Charlotte, and his services to Smith himself on the "Antelope" and "Pompee", and in Rio de Janeiro.

Aggiungi al carrelloLetter in copperplate signed by Smith and with the subscription (corrected) in his hand, three pages, folio, chipped, edges dingy, tear on fold of bifoliate, some marking, but minimal loss of text which is legible. He is promoting the "enlightened and benevolent views of the Chevalier Jullien towards the establishment and developement [sic, indicating a French writer?] of the most improved and simpmlified methods of Education". He hopes that he can persuade his correspondent to promote Jullien's system. "His political principles are those of a national lover of civil liberty consequently an opposer . . . of the Revolutionary Doctrines which as being antisocial and (to use one of their new fangled expressions) 'liberticide' were most obnoxious to him. Victim of those political principles under the reign of the Child and Champion of Jacobinism he sought his consolation in literary pursuits . . ." He describes his benevolent nationalism, and his looking "to the improvement of the rising generation by means of a rational and liberal education." The correction to the subscription involves a change for "your Royal Highness's most obedient servant" to "Your sincere friend & most, etc." (From a website): "Chevalier Jullien, regarded by many as the 'father of comparative education'". Note: This item was originally part of a massive archive of material acquired by Richard Bentley and made available to John Barrow for his biography of Smith.

Text: " My dear Aunt, | The recollection of my Situation must occasionally present itself to my Friends with redoubled anxiety when brought to Mind by the Accounts from Paris of tumults at the prison doors, Assassinations within the Walls & the whole train of mischief which the Daemon of Sedition & discord is perpetually Waking in this ill fated City! I therefore eagerly embrace an opportunity which offers to satisfy them of my Safety - My health wh. began to suffer from the close confinement I experienced in the Abbaye is reestablished since I have been allowed to take air & exercise in the Court Yard of this Prison which is a Palace in comparison to the former. I was transferred hither on the 3rd of July in conseuqnce of my representation of the badness of the Air at the Abbaye become insupportable [underlined] from the numbers thrown into it on the discovery of the Jacobin conspiracy - My Cell was a dark dismal Hole, I had a Lieutt of the Gendarmerie at my elbow 'pour garder le Monstre a Vue' - I was not allowed to shave myself, for fear I suppose that I shd cut my Throat. In short I underwent all the vigour of the Bastille without being able to extort a reason for such treatment from anybody who approached me. They were all either mute or assured me that it was entirely on account of the great consideration they had for me as I was not considered 'comme un Prisonnier ordinaire' - They were all very Civil and even respectful to me here!!! My Table is decently well furnished - My rooms are now Airy & gay being the Apartments of the former Keeper which were occupied by the Royal Family before their Separation [.]". See Image for the rest of the contents. Note: I've found no evidence that the original letter survives or was eventually published.

ITEM 1: Holograph, one page, 18 x 23cms, aged but good condition double column, some additions and corrections, apparently a draft for a formal document giving details concerning the distinctions of Wiliiam Sidney Smith in both English and French as follows: "The undersigned Sir William Sidney Smith Admiral of the Blue Squadron of His Britannic Majesty's Fleet, Knight Grand Prior of the Antient and most noble Order of the Temple, Commander Grand Cross of the Royal Military Orders of the Sword of Sweden, The Tower and Sword of Portugal, of Saint Ferdinand and Merit of Sicily and of the Antient Nobility of the Four Emperors of Germany, Commander of the Most Honorable Order of the Bath [Knight] of the Crescent of the Ottoman Porte, Knight of the Lion of Holstein, Doctor of Laws of the Univerities of Oxford and Cambridge, Fellow of the Royal Society of London and President of the Knights Liberators of the Slaves of Africa Declares that all persons are bound to respect these prents the same being lawfully issued under and by virtue of the said Order of the Temple. | Given at Paris the 8th Nisan 705 (20th March 1823) | [Masonic symbol] f. Gulielmus Anglicanus [sketch of a seal]". This runs parallel to a translation into French. ITEM 2: One page, 12mo, "Nisan 1823", printed heading "Ordre du Temple", brief note with subscription and name I can't fathom (SEE Image), text as follows: "Laissez entrer Monsieur Le Grand Sieur d'Angleterre, Chevr. Sir Sydney Smith." From the archive of Richard Bentley & Son, material about Smith accumulated for John Barrow's biography. Notes: a. "The "Knights Liberators of the Slaves in Africa" was a knightly order founded by British Admiral Sir Sidney Smith around 1815, though it was more of a philanthropic and political campaign than a formal military order. Its stated goal was to end the enslavement of Europeans captured by Barbary corsairs and to publicize the cause of ending slavery more broadly in Africa. Smith used the organization and related events, such as a banquet at the Congress of Vienna, to bring attention to the issue and propose international action." [AI]; b. "Smith had managed to run up significant debts through his diplomatic expenses, which the British government proved to be very slow in reimbursing. He also lived the high life and his efforts to mobilise opinion against the slave trade had cost a good deal of money. In Britain, at that time debtors were often imprisoned until their debts were paid, so Smith moved his family to France, settling in Paris. Eventually the government did reimburse his expenditures and increased his pension, allowing him to live in some style. Despite frequent attempts to obtain a seagoing position, he was never to hold a command again. He died on 26 May 1840 of a stroke. He is buried with his wife in Père Lachaise Cemetery.".
