Text title page: RURAL AFFAIRS: A PRACTICAL AND COPIOUSLY ILLUSTRATED REGISTER OF RURAL ECONOMY AND RURAL TASTE, INCLUDING COUNTRY DWELLINGS, IMPROVING AND PLANTING GROUNDS, FRUITS AND FLOWERS, DOMESTIC ANIMALS, AND ALL FARM AND GARDEN PROCESSES. BY J.J. THOMAS . . . VOL. III. FOUR HUNDRED AND FORTY ENGRAVINGS. Engraved pictorial title page: "Illustrated Annual Register of Rural Affairs for 1861-2-3. With 440 Engravings. Vol. III." Evidently a compilation reissue of preceding annual edition for the Preface explains the book's content and contrasting text title versus pictorial title: "This Volume is the Third in a Series, issued triennially, and composed of matter originally appearing in the Annual Register of Rural Affairs. . . The different Volumes are sold separately, there being no necessary connection between their contents, although it is intended to render each in some degree a link between the others." Paged as i-xiii, [1], 21-340, [1]. Hardcover: H 21.25cm x L 13.75cm. Original dark purple cloth rubbed; light staining to rear board; bumping and wear at board corners; spine cloth sunned with slight loss at frayed ends; front board's gilt stamped centerpiece vignette and spine gilt stamping remain bright. Edges toned; black (ink?) staining to top edge with leaves fractionally affected at top margins; two pencil signatures on front free endpaper; mostly light to occasionally mild foxing throughout. Bottom quarter of front free endpaper and adjoining front flyleaf torn-out with tear to front pastedown paper at lower front hinge (no such tearing to any text leaves). Slight pliability to front board but otherwise binding still firm. Only a good copy. Numerous small b/w illustrations inset amongst text.

Aggiungi al carrello2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In very good condition, lightly aged. Had he known that Hughes's wedding was 'coming off so soon' he would have been 'in time with a little gift'. As it is, he asks him to choose for himself, 'with the aid of your wife': 'Are you and she sick of the Oxford Books of Verse? Is Shakspeare's England too weighty (avoirdupois) for war-time establishments? Or are there any obvious of books which no gentleman's library should be without, such as Dickens or Thackeray?' He is happy that he noticed the announcement in The Times: 'It was a great pleasure to be present at such a suitable wedding; and by suitable I am impertinent enough to refer not merely to the simplicity of the whole ceremony, but to your wife'. He hopes to 'renew our connection of 1913-1914 - how long ago it seems!' In a postscript he invites the couple to lunch with him in London. The Times announced the marriage of 'Lieutenant George Ravensworth Hughes, Dorset Regiment, second son of Professor T. McKenny Hughes, of Cambridge, and Margaret, eldest daughter of Judge Graham, K.C., of Ballewan, Stirlingshire'. From the McKenny Hughes papers.
