Like most such collections, this one is a kind of betrayal; the photographs - and photographers - most poignantly present here are the ones that are not included. There are several other collections called The Best of LIFE that we could have done, and perhaps someday we will. In the meantime, we will busy ourselves with the sort of journalism that inspires pictures that one day can stand alone, pictures that outlive their stories, pictures as great as poems. We chose the text of a poem, Whitman's "One's-Self I sing" from Leaves of Grass, to accompany the photographs in the section that follows. But as an epigraph for this collection, a few lines from Whitman's "Starting from Paumanok" serve better. Let them serve as an epigraph for photography as well, and for this magazine: This then is life, Here is what has come to the surface after so many throes and convulsions. How curious! How real!"
