Condizione: Very good. - A collection of 8 original vintage black & white photographs taken at events hosted by the Circus Saints and Sinners Club, a charitable service organization founded in 1929. The earliest of these images dating from the 1950's is a 5-3/4 inch high by 7-1/2 inch wide gelatin silver print by Reni Newsphoto Service depicting Richard M. Nixon reaching his hand out to P.T. Barnum's lion "Sheba" while both are within the same cage. The June 4, 1953 event took place either immediately before or after a luncheon and charity roast hosted by the District of Columbia P.T. Barnum Tent (i.e. chapter) of the Circus Saints and Sinners Club. The photograph is one of a series of shots taken when Nixon stroked the lion's head while others looked on from safety outside the cage.A second photo, this one measuring 4-3/8 inches high by 5-5/8 inches wide, likely taken at the same event, although the number "59" penciled on the verso might indicate a later date, depicts Richard Nixon seated at a banquet table with a couple of other guests. Nixon and the others are applauding an unseen speaker or performer. This photograph is creased along the right edge with a one inch tear to that edge repaired with tape from the verso.A smaller 4 inch high by 3-1/8 inch wide matte finish photograph from 1961 printed on "Minox" photo stock depicts Dwight D. Eisenhower, attired in a three piece suit, shaking hands with one of the event's organizers as others look on.A 6-7/8 inch high by 7-7/8 inch wide gelatin silver photograph depicts Harry S. Truman standing between two men, one dressed as an angel and the other as the devil ("saints and sinners"). The devil at Truman's right wears the rare "Truman is Human" button designed for this 1962 Circus Saints and Sinners Club event.John F. Kennedy is portrayed in a glossy 7-1/8 inch high by 7-7/8 inch wide photograph. Holding a rolled up program in his left hand, Kennedy's finger is extended as he makes a point to the cigar wielding man with whom he is speaking. Two other men stand in the background. A 5-7/8 inch high by 7-1/4 inch wide gelatin silver photograph circa 1970 depicts Barry Goldwater shaking the hand of an unidentified man at one of the club's events. A stocked bar can be glimpsed in the background.A 5-3/8 inch high by 5-5/8 inch wide photograph dating from between 1968 and 1972 depicts Spiro T. Agnew seated at a banquet table upon which is draped the "Circus Saints & Sinners" banner. Leaning on a large sculpture of a black elephant at the left of the image is a large round sign proclaiming "All the Way with STA".One last photograph, this one measuring 5-1/8 inches high by 8-1/4 inches wide, depicts 14 unidentified men seated and standing behind a buffet table at a Circus Saints & Sinners Club event.Once likely mounted in an album, there are glue stains on the verso of each of the photographs. Otherwise, except for the tear mentioned to one of the photographs depicting Richard Nixon, all of the photographs are in very good condition with only minor creases. The Circus Saints & Sinners club is a charitable association of business and professional people which was formed in 1929 in New York City by former members of the Circus Fans Association of America. Initially founded to provide aid to retired circus performers in need of financial assistance, the club grew into an organization which contributes to a wide range of charities. In reference to their roots, Circus Saints & Sinners Club chapters are called "tents".
