Hij werd benoemd tot buitengewoon hoogleraar redeneerkunde in Leiden aan de faculteit letteren en hoogleraar ethiek aan de faculteit godsgeleerdheid. In 1628 werd hij hoogleraar aan de faculteit wiskunde en natuurwetenschappen. Tevens Rector Magnicus van de Universiteit Leiden. Veel invloed op de studie wijsbegeerte, met name op het denken van Aristoteles.

Hij was tevens geschiedschrijver van de Staten-Generaal.
