Da: Brothertown Books, Deansboro, NY, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. This is "CORINNE OU L'ITALIE" By MADAME DE STAËL. The binding is quarter-bound red leather and cloth-covered board; it is a mid-nineteenth century American edition in the original French. This novel was written by of the most influential and widely read French women authors. Anne Louise Germaine de Staël-Holstein (née Necker) (1766 - 1817) was more commonly known to the world as Madame de Staël. She was a French-speaking Swiss author who chose to live in Paris, when she was not traveling. The book is signed and inscribed on the front fly-leaf, 'Aurelia G. Doud, White Seminary, Clinton, Sept. '20th'. Miss Doud did not give the year, but the White Seminary, which she identifies in her inscription was built and established in 1851; White Seminary was the female arm of the Clinton Liberal Institute (founded in 1831 in Clinton, New York). The Clinton Liberal Institute was moved from Clinton to Fort Plain in 1878, and the premises of White Seminary closed. Thus this edition was issued between 1852 and 1863 . In the 19th century, Clinton, N.Y. was known as Schooltown, for the many private schools (including Hamilton College) located in the village. Grover Cleveland, future President of the United States, attended Clinton Grammar School. Another famous scholar living in Clinton was Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross. She attended White Seminary, which structure still stands in Clinton. It is possible that Aurelia G. Doud, the original owner of this book, was a one-time classmate of Clara Barton, and Aurelia may even have known her. In all events this book is a nice relic from the past, a touchstone of sorts to the past history of Clinton - "Schooltown." TITLE : Corinne ou L'Italie AUTHOR : Baronne Anne Louise Germaine de Staël-Holstein ( 1766 - 1817 ) DATE : N.D. [ but c. 1852 - 1863 ] PLACE : New York IMPRINT : Leavitt and Allen EDITION : Reprint LANGUAGE : French DESCRIPTIVE: Trade Hardcover. Introduction in English. Text and notes in French; 432 pages (pagination includes title and Table of Contents (at rear); title verso presents recommendations from reviewers (In English); approximately 4 1/2" x 7 1/8" (12mo); quarter-bound, bright red leather with textured gray cloth boards; title, etc. in gold on spine; publisher's device stamped in blind at foot of spine; all edges speckle-dyed pale red. This is the French text of "Corinne" in its entirety. CONDITION - VERY GOOD - This is a previously owned book that remains clean and attractive with the following imperfections noted: EXTERIOR - Head of spine is abraded and frayed; foot has moderate abrasion; book worm runnels display on surface of spine in top quarter and bookworm holes display along front joint (most noticeable near head - mild darkening of color, which remains fairly bright- title remains bright, with letter 'E' in 'Italie' partially obscured - else clean and presentable ; Moderate surface rub to boards - scattered spotting - bumped corner tips - else clean and presentable. Text-block edges are a bit dulled and rubbed, else clean BINDING : Solid . while the leaves open widely, the text block is basically solid and sound - one gathering stands proudly (juts out) about half-way through the book - the binding threads are easily viewed at that point -- it is obvious the book has been read, but not abused - no pages are detached, and, aside from the shaken leaves (comprising pp 219 - 224) no other leaves are loose. INTERIOR - End papers : Heavily foxed and with scattered foxing - lightly penciled inscription to bottom fore-edge corner of paste-down (indecipherable) - old dealer's code in pencil at top; Lightly penciled at the top of the fly-leaf is the happy statement, "The last day of school" (or maybe it was written with sadness!) One can discern the edge speckling "spray" along the bottom edges of rep. Paper is toned and considerably foxed throughout; else clean and presentable throughout with no underlining or writing.
