Philadelphia: Jewish Publication Society of America, 1957, 35cm., unpaginated, approx. 32pp., worn but still good price-clipped dust-jacket, superficial stain at top right corner, with several chips and tears around edges, very good tall yellow cloth. Beautifully designed and illustrated edition, with English text opening from the left, and Hebrew text opening from the right. Both Steinhardt and Baruch were born in Germany. They had worked together as early as 1921 on a Haggadah.

Verso, in Hebrew: "The twelfth Zionist Congress", which was held September 1, 1921 in Carlsbad, Czechoslovakia. This was the first congress convened after WWI, and after the issuance of the November 1917 Balfour Declaration. Ratification of the British Mandate for Palestine aimed at guiding the establishment of the Jewish national home is welcomed by the Congress. Chaim Weizmann, elected president of WZO, replacing Warburg, takes part in discussions about issues of Zionist-Arab relations after the Arab riots in Palestine in 1920. The Congress likewise briefs on the activities of Keren HaYesod, the financial arm of the WZO, which had been established a year earlier in London.

Pamphlet laid in: Mitteilungen der Soncino Gesellschaft, Nr. 4, Februar 1929 (15 pages). Text in German (fraktur/gothic font) and Hebrew. Signed in pencil by the artist on the colophon page. Only edition. The dimensions of the volume, which is bound in grey paper printed wraps, are roughly 29.5 x 24 cm. It consists of 25 unpaginated leaves and a frontispiece (sometimes lacking). The other illustrations are eight tipped-in plates and a facsimile of a music score. Some ruckling to the wraps, otherwise a good copy on lightly-aged paper. Striking woodcut on front cover, 13 x 16 cm, showing and old Jew with a boy before a table with two candles. An attractive work, delicately and sensitively illustrated with images of Jews at prayer. Made all the more poignant in the knowledge that Nadel perished at Auschwitz. Inscribed to 'Emmy' on the front free endpaper from 'Kurt zum 19. X. 21.', with a quote from Alfred Polgar: 'Es dauert lange, bis man reif [sic] zur Lebensfreude. - Etwa bis zu [sic] jenem Tag, an dem die Todesangst beginnt.' Uncommon: no copy on COPAC.
