Halbleder der Zeit mit goldgeprägtem Rückentitel. bekratzt, beschabt… und berieben. der Geschichte der berühmten «Loge Praga» und dem reichen kulturellen Leben der Juden in Prag von dem Historiker und Hochschullehrer Samuel Steinherz (1857-1942). «Obschon Steinherz seinem jüdischen Glauben treu blieb, wurde er von Theodor von Sickel in Rom für die anspruchsvolle Bearbeitung der Nuntiaturberichte aus Deutschland (1560-1565) eingesetzt und erwarb sich damit und durch seine urkundenkritischen Spezialstudien zur österreichischen Geschichte Respekt in der altösterreichischen Historikerelite. 1901 erhielt Steinherz eine Professur an der Deutschen Universität Prag. Angriffe von Seiten Deutschnationaler im Sommer und Herbst 1922 veranlassten Steinherz als nunmehrigen Bürger der Tschechoslowakei, ein öffentliches Bekenntnis zum Deutschtum abzugeben. Er wandte sich, unterstützt von der Loge Praga des Ordens B'nai B'rith, der Erforschung der Geschichte der Juden in Prag und der Tschechoslowakei zu. Steinherz musste sehen, wie die meisten seiner Fachkollegen sich an den Nationalsozialismus anbiederten und für dessen Barbarei eine pseudowissenschaftliche Kulisse lieferten . Als kleinbürgerlicher Individualist hatte Steinherz zeitlebens unpolitisch' bleiben wollen, was ihn auch zum Diener der kulturellen Hegemonie der herrschenden Klasse machte, deren Opfer er jetzt wurde. Als über Achtzigjährige wurden Samuel Steinherz und seine aus Wien stammende Frau Sophie ins Ghetto Theresienstadt deportiert; er verstarb dort 1942» (Gerhard Oberkofler, Samuel Steinherz - Biographische Skizze über einen altösterreichischen Juden in Prag, 2008). Die Tafeln zeigen frühe hebräische Handschriften und Drucke, teils mit Illustrationen. Kaum merklich, gleichmäßig gebräunt, im Block sehr sauber und wohlerhalten. Titelrückseite mit winzigem hebräischen Stempel, Vorsatz mit einem großen zweifarbig gedruckten und signierten Exlibris eines hebräischen Sammlers. Insgesamt gutes Exemplar dieses.
