Theodore Ayrault Dodge (1842-1909) was the nineteenth century's greatest military historian and the author of biographies of Hannibal, Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Gustavus Adolphus, and Napoleon. In 1862, he arrived on the Virginia Peninsula as a company officer in the 101st New York, a regiment reinforcing George B. McClellan's campaign against Richmond. Here is the war as seen from the company-officer perspective, recorded by a young man of superior intellect who would become a leading historian of the Civil War generation. Although only some thirteen months of the war are detailed here, from the Peninsula through Gettysburg, where he lost a leg, they were critical months for the Union cause.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 3rd Edition. "The pyramids of Egypt are among the spectacular wonders of the world. What was it that prompted the pharaohs to construct these elaborate tombs for themselves. In this book Dr. I. E. S. Edwards, who has been the Keeper of Egyptian Antiquities at the British Museum since 1955, offers explanations and poses new problems as he traces the development and decline of this form of burial from the First Dynasty mastabas and the great Step Pyramid of Zoser to the Sixth Dynasty pyramid complex of Pepi II. "This book is not only the most authoritative singe-volume description of the pyramids; it is also a revealing study of the religious beliefs of the ancient Egyptians, as we understand them from tomb inscriptions, and the personalities and way of life of the people who built these monuments. The author also deals with the fascinating but seemingly insoluble problem of how the pyramids were constructed. This book has long been recognized as a most important work in its field."
