Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: Very Good. Original sheet music in great condition - only minor edgewear, all else fine. Piano, lyrics and guitar chords. The song itself is a wartime piece, very much of its moment. The title's "Joe" refers to a serviceman ? a soldier, sailor, or airman ? and the song's premise is that a girl is speaking on behalf of her man who has gone off to war, delivering a romantic message he could not deliver himself. This fits squarely into the enormous body of 1942-era popular music that addressed separation, longing, and loyalty on the home front. The song was recorded by several prominent acts of the day, including the Four King Sisters and, notably, the Sammy Kaye Orchestra with vocalist Don Cornell. Joan Morris and pianist William Bolcom also later recorded it as part of their celebrated series of early American popular song recordings. What makes this particular piece of sheet music exceptional is the cover portrait of Judith Wetheral. A Featured Vocalist, Montreal and Quebec City, 1942 Judith Wetheral was a singer of considerable local renown in wartime Montreal, a city whose nightclub scene in the early 1940s was one of the most vibrant in North America. Before her move to Quebec City, she had built a following performing at several of Montreal's most prominent entertainment venues. The Chez Maurice was one of the city's storied cabarets, and the Esquire, which had opened in 1940 on Stanley Street, was already establishing itself as a premier jazz room. The 400 Club rounded out what was clearly an impressive circuit of engagements for a vocalist on the rise.Montrealers came to know her simply as "the good-looking girl with the dark brown voice," a phrase that captures both her physical presence and the distinctively warm, low-toned quality of her singing style. The description "sultry-voiced" used by The Montreal Star would have resonated strongly with audiences accustomed to the big band and cabaret idiom of the era, in which a rich, smoky contralto was considered the height of sophistication. Her talents did not go unnoticed beyond the Montreal club circuit. At some point shortly before June 1942, the management of the Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City engaged her as featured vocalist with the orchestra of Gilbert Darrise, performing in the hotel's celebrated Jacques Cartier Room. That room, with its vaulted ceilings, decorative fireplace, and medieval-style stained glass windows, was one of the Chateau's grandest interior spaces and a fitting stage for a performer of her calibre. The engagement was evidently a success of the first order. The Montreal Star, in its June 20, 1942 column, described her as the outstanding feature of entertainment at the Chateau Frontenac, calling her success "sensational." On the strength of that reception, Wetheral signed a new contract with Canadian Pacific Hotels, the prestigious company that operated the Chateau Frontenac as part of its chain of grand railway hotels across the country. This contract would have placed her among the professional entertainers performing at one of Canada's most iconic and historically significant hotels at a remarkable moment in history, just one year before Churchill, Roosevelt, and Mackenzie King would convene the First Quebec Conference within its walls.Judith Wetheral stands as a representative figure of the many talented performers who shaped the golden age of Canadian hotel and cabaret entertainment during the Second World War years, a world that has since slipped largely from the historical record despite the vivid impressions it left on those who witnessed it.
