From the Forward: "The list of buildings illustrated in this catalogue by no means constitutes a comprehensive inventory of all the esthetically interesting and historically important early structures remaining in Ann Arbor. As the exhibition title suggests, this indeed "A Sesquicentennial Selection" - a sampler, not a catalogue raisonne. Anyone who knows Ann Arbor will thing readily of any number of buildings that might well have been included, and this is as it should be, or one purpose of the exhibition is to stimulate public awareness of the man noteworthy structure remaining from Ann Arbor's first century. It will be noted also that modest dwellings and utilitarian structures are included along with the larger, more ambitious buildings, and that some examples are in less than perfect condition. This perhaps is a truer reflection of the real situation than an exhibition exclusively focusing on large, well-kept residences would have been. The intent of the exhibition's organizers was to suggest the variety and wide distribution of interesting buildings in Ann Arbor; the opportunities for preservation as well as accomplishments.".
