Hardbound. Condizione: Very Good. Reprint Edition. Description: Includes a black and white frontis plate (the artist is not identified). This is the only illustration. ''A Pioneer Story of a Captive White Girl Among the Indians.'' This was originally published in 1882 by Harper & Brothers; the most recent copyright date is 1910; this Grosset & Dunlap edition is a later, undated reprint, circa 1940s. This is from the publisher's Famous Stories for Young People series. William Osborne Stoddard (1835-1925) was an American journalist, inventor and author. He once served as a private secretary to Abraham Lincoln. In addition to his other writings, he wrote 76 children's books. This story is about two girls, raised as sisters -- one a captive white girl and the other the daughter of an Apache chief. When some magazines are found, Rita vaguely remembers her childhood and knows that these magazines are ''talking leaves''. The story of the girls intersects with two other white captives from another tribe -- a man and boy. BNDING/CONDITION: orange cloth with burgundy text, top edge blue (faded); a small stain on the bottom edge of the text block, otherwise a Very Good book; the dust jacket has a green felt pen mark on the spine, external tape repairs to a torn section on the front panel; the cover art is badly faded at the spine; but the front panel art, in spite of tape repairs is quite attractive with good color. illustrated endpapers. 8vo (8.25 inches tall). 250 pages.
