"Reaching for Glory is a mesmerizing journey into the inner psychological and emotional life of a frightened, lonely, driven, suspicious man. The Johnson of the secret tapes sees hidden enemies all around him. Disloyal aides are flirting with his nemesis, Senator Robert Kennedy. In Johnson's conspiratorial mind, Communists are behind the Vietnam demonstrations on college campuses. The Soviet Ambassador is manipulating U.S. Senators to oppose the war. Right-wing fanatics are behind black rioters in Los Angeles. As Reaching for Glory opens, LBJ is campaigning for the greatest presidential landslide in history. To win, he hands embarrassing secrets about Barry Goldwater to friendly reporters. When his closest aide is arrested in a sex scandal, he enlists Lady Bird and FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover to keep it from exploding before the election. On Election Night in 1964, despite his unprecedented victory, Johnson is angry and afraid. He fulminates against network anchors who say that his landslide was merely against Goldwater. He fears that Robert Kennedy will enmesh him in a scandal that might force him to resign. We hear Johnson, agonized as civil rights marchers are bloodied in Selma, horse-trading with George Wallace and Martin Luther King, Jr. We hear him manhandling Congress to win voting rights and Medicare and other important laws, more than almost any President in history. Most of all, [the book] allows us for the first time to listen to the secret history of how Lyndon Johnson took us step by step, often by stealth, into Vietnam. While boasting in public that there will be victory in Vietnam, in private he moans that the war can never be won and that it will crush his presidency. He foresees the backlash against the war, civil rights, and the Great Society that will bring Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan to power. [The book] lets us hear LBJ's complete recorded private telephone conversations with Jacqueline Kennedy just after her husband's murder. It also benefits from full, exclusive access to the diary that Lady Bird Johnson dictated every day, recording her inner thoughts about her agonized husband and the political dramas swirling about them. [The book] is an indispensable contribution to the history of the twentieth century. It allows us to live at Lyndon Johnson's side, day by day, through the dramatic, triumphant, catastrophic, and pivotal year of a turbulent presidency that continues to affect all of our lives." - excerpt from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.

DJ worn, torn, with tears (some repaired with tape), and chips. Name of previous owner written in ink on fep. This is a Columbia Records Legacy Collection Book. Goddard Lieberson (April 5, 1911 - May 29, 1977) was the president of Columbia Records from 1956 to 1971, and again from 1973 to 1975. He became president of the Recording Industry Association of America in 1964. He was also a composer, and studied with George Frederick McKay, at the University of Washington, Seattle. Lieberson was noted for his personal elegance, taste and style, and was renowned as a wit, bon vivant and international traveler, whose circle of friends and acquaintances including Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Richard Rogers, W. Somerset Maugham, Noël Coward and John Gielgud. Lieberson began working for the CBS group of labels in 1938 - the same year the company was acquired by the CBS broadcasting empire - and he began his career at Columbia as an A&R Manager. Before becoming president of the company, Foreword by Lyndon B. Johnson. This book was written in the words of "Alistair Cooke, W. Averell Harriman, Mrs. Rose Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, Jacqueline Kennedy, Pierre Salinger, Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., Adlai E. Stevenson, and others." Derived from a Kirkus review: The love of family and friends and intimate associates informs a volume about JFK in such a manner that this is the way we too will remember him. It is presented with high competence and style and portrays JFK from childhood on. The last day at Dallas is not shown; Tom Wicker's report covers it. President Johnson's words preface the volume, James MacGregor Burns' close it. Between come the testimonials of many others, articles on major events, issues, crises, family reminiscence, and JFK's own words to form a living biography. The photographs reveal him unforgettably, in stress and repose, trial and triumph. The quality here rises to that of the man. Among the participants/contributors are: McGeorge Bundy, Bruce Clarke, Alistair Cooke, William O. Douglas, Lord Harlech, Averell Harriman, John Hersey, Herman Kahn, Robert Kennedy, Rose Kennedy, Evelyn Lincoln, William Manchester, Mary McGrory, Richard Nixon, David Powers, Walt Rostow, Richard Rovere, Dean rusk, Pierre Salinger, Arthur Schlesinger, Eunice Shiver, Hugh Sidey, Theodore Sorensen, Adlai Stevenson, Tad Szulc, Tom Wicker, and Jerome Wiesner.

"A .classic in its laconic, spare, compelling evocation by a participant of the shifting moods and maneuvers of the most dangerous moment in human history."-Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. During the thirteen days in October 1962 when the United States confronted the Soviet Union over its installation of missiles in Cuba, few people shared the behind-the-scenes story as it is told here by the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy. In this unique account, he describes each of the participants during the sometimes hour-to-hour negotiations, with particular attention to the actions and views of his brother, President John F. Kennedy. Thirteen Days: A Memoir of the Cuban Missile Crisis is Robert F. Kennedy's account of the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. The book was released in 1969, a year after his assassination. Thirteen Days describes the meetings held by the Executive Committee (ExComm), the team assembled by US President John F. Kennedy to handle the tense situation that developed between the United States and the Soviet Union following the discovery of Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba, 90 miles (140 km) from Florida. Robert Kennedy, who was the US Attorney General at the time, describes his brother John's leadership style during the crisis as involved, but not controlling. Robert Kennedy viewed the military leaders on the council sympathetically, and recognized that their lifelong concentration on war was difficult to set aside. The book was used as the basis for the 1974 television play The Missiles of October. First Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated].
