First Edition. Quarto. xiv, 231 pages, illustrated with plans and photographic images. Kenneth Stowell was a close friend of Lewis Mumford. The Society of Architectural Historians notes that there was "the drive to suggest high-caliber products and efficient operation through a pervasive sense of newness." (March 1992), p. 25. Stowell's book is cited as a major example. Esperdy notes Stowell saw the need to solve the problem of decongestion, represented by Chicago's tenement blocks. While some saw the removal and destruction of the ornamental work of the past, modernization brought needed improvements in terms of the quality of life not only for the affluent but the end of the unhealthy environments of the slums. A near fine copy bound in black pictorial cloth lettered and decorated in red, spine lettering red.
