Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Illustrated Edition. This is a handsome, custom leather-bound collection of seven volumes from the "MEDIAEVAL TOWNS SERIES" published by J.M. Dent & Sons in London. All volumes are nicely illustrated and contain at least one fold-out map (some maps are in color). Most volumes contain one or more tipped-in illustrated clippings (from another source) either affixed to an end paper, or to a page within the text; some clippings are placed loosely between the pages. Beautiful full-leather binding with intricate gilt decorations on the covers, four raised bands on the spines, marbled end papers, ribbon page markers, gilt lettering on the spines, and gilt page edges on all sides. The series was inspired by travels J.M. Dent had enjoyed during the 1890's. The collection includes the following seven volumes: * The Story of VERONA by Alethea Wiel (1907) * The Story of AVIGNON by Thomas Okey (1911) * The Story of PERUGIA by Margaret Symonds and Lina Duff Gordon (1912) * The Story of ROUEN by Theodore Andrea Cook (1917) * The Story of CHARTRES by Cecil Headlam (1922) * The Story of ASSISI by Lina Duff Gordon (1925) * The Story of VENICE by Thomas Okey (1925) Condition: Overall the collection is in Very Good condition. All volumes are tightly bound with no loose pages. Each has a name/date (1924 or 1926) written in pen on the front end paper. Some cracking/chipping to the leather on the spines. Here are condition issues found.CHARTRES - occasional tiny check-marks or dashes next to lines of text in the outer margin. AVIGNON - there are a couple of stains on the front cover; leather on front cover has faded; 2" leather tear at the top-right spine corner; wear to the bottom 2 cover corners; timeline of Popes handwritten on the rear end papers; the ribbon page marker is present but has separated; crack at front hinge between the end papers (though the front cover remains firmly in place and is not shaky). ASSISSI - lacking ribbon page marker; leather faded at top half of front cover. VERONA - the ribbon page marker is present but detached; foxing to the frontispiece and tissue guard over it.
