Before the first round-the-world voyage was made by Magellan's expeditionary force, Christopher Columbus had already accomplished a transatlantic crossing in what could be termed a walnut-shell---for the Santa Maria with her crew of 52 men was probably only 56 feet long, 26 feet wide and had just 3,228 square feet of sail. The voyage lasted 70 days until dawn of October 12th, 1492, when Rodrigo de Triana cried: "Land ahoy!" and thereupon pocketed the 10,000 maravedi which had been promised to the first man to shout out these long-awaited words." This was the great age of sail, and this book, in text and illustrations, relives that exciting adventure, which spanned five centuries. A collection of 13 articles covering five centuries of ship type, design and achievements, with details of 8 classic sailing ships. A NEAR FINE copy of the 1st. thus, reduced to VERY GOOD by small inscription and minimal fading. 1967-01-01.
