Libro Prima edizione
Hard bound. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. First Edition. Administrators and Their Service is a historical study of the Sarawak Administrative Service. It traces its evolution from the 1840s soon after the founding of the Brooke Raj, with its heavy reliance on a small group of Europeans, through the later period of Brooke rule to the post-war British colonial administration. This administration, in its final years, recruited an increasing number of local officers in the preparation for self-government. This book focuses on the officers who were the mainstay of the Service and formed the point of contact between the government and the local population. It provides information on their backgrounds, modes of recruitment, training, and conditions of service. The author was formerly Research Fellow at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, Singapore. xxi, 274 pp., 20 b&w plates, 2 maps, bibliography, index. Tape residue marks on front and rear endpapers; otherwise a new/unread copy. Size: 22 x 14 cm.

Buch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book presents a new organizing framework for studying democratic recession and autocratization in Southeast Asia. By introducing a new concept, 'democratic backlash,' the book details how democratic recession inevitably provokes resistance that often forms the nucleus of new democratic movements, and in doing so, argues that it is important to identify these reverse trends that may eventually become dominant. The book contributes to current literature which thus far has sought to understand the causes and consequences of the decline in democracy around the world. Previous literature has focused primarily on advanced democracies, or alternatively, on large scale quantitative comparison. As such, this book helps fill a research gap with its focus on Southeast Asia, employing a comparative case study approach.Chapter authors are experts on Southeast Asia, a region that has experienced democratic recession and autocratization in a variety of ways, from rising populism to military coups. 292 pp. Englisch.
