First edition, first printing of this English translation. Wrappers, lacking front wrapper, sewn binding, 454 pages (227 double leaves), 7.25x12.75 inches (18x32 cm). Bound in sewn-on contemporary silk covered boards with a silk brocade decoration on the front cover, and partial of the front wrapper (title portion) glued to the inside front cover. Condition: The front and rear silk covered boards that are sewn on over the original work are coming loose, hanging on with just a few threads, and the silk brocade on the front board has some loose threads; the front original wrapper is only partially present as noted above, the rear wrapper is present and has a few inch closed tear and some edge chips, the blank front free endpaper has creases, chips, and a previous owner's lovely bookplate (Hazel Rhodes), otherwise the inner pages are very nice, just a bit of corner and edge wear here and there, overall complete, tight, bright, clean and unmarked. The illustrations are gorgeous. RARE and BEAUTIFULLY BOUND COPY of the 1936 FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. YU TZU-TAN (illustratore).

Mount Omei is the highest of the Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains of China, and is traditionally regarded as the bodhima??a, or place of enlightenment, of the Bodhisattva Samantabhadra and home of the BaiMei Daosin, the White Eye-browed Monk, a legendary character in Chinese martial arts. It is said his skills made him virtually indestructible. Due to size or weight, this item may require additional postage for international or priority shipping.

The double-page plates begin with a Panoramic View of Mount Omei from the South Gate of Omei-hsien to the Summit, showing all the defiles, watercourses, monasteries, peaks, cliffs, and ancient relics which must be passed. The remaining plates provide a look at each of the 72 monasteries of P'u-hsien, showing the architecture, grounds, paths, etc. The corresponding text, in English and Chinese, provides a detailed walking tour with historical annotations.
