Als Untersuchungsgegenstand eignet sich für dieses Vorhaben besonders der Mannheimer Stadtteil Jungbusch, der einen hohen Anteil an Bewohnern mit Migrationshintergrund aufweist. Unterstützend wird dabei unter der Annahme, dass Filme soziale Wirklichkeit widerspiegeln, der Dokumentarfilm ¿Transnationalmannschaft¿ von Philipp Kohl aus dem Jahr 2010 herangezogen, der Eindrücke des Stadtteils während der Fußball-WM 2010 vermittelt. Das Forschungsinteresse richtet sich dabei primär auf die Identifikation verschiedener Personen im Jungbusch mit ihrem Stadtteil, Deutschland oder dem Ursprungsland, die aus deren Verbindung zum Fußball deutlich werden soll. Diese Verbindung dient dabei als Zugang, um Identifikationsprozesse aufzudecken. Forschungsleitende Annahme ist dabei, dass die Bewohner des Stadtteils mit Migrationshintergrund in verschiedene Identifikationsbeziehungen eingebunden sind, einerseits mit ihrem Herkunftsland oder andererseits dem Land in dem sie sich dauerhaft aufhalten. Des Weiteren steht dabei auch die Frage im Raum, in welchem Verhältnis die Identifikation mit einem regionalen Raum (Mannheim bzw. Mannheim-Jungbusch) zu einem überregionalen Raum (Deutschland) steht.
