Beyond that is a tight, square book with bright covers.This classic study of La Salle's last expedition by historian Francis Parkman, known to Americans for his earlier book The Oregon Trail, was first published in 1869. Commissioned by France to explore and govern the Western territory, La Salle's expedition went off course and he and his men were lost in the wilderness and endured disease and death. Eventually La Salle was killed by his own men, and his body was never found. No part of Parkman's text proper has been omitted or changed in any way. His extensive and lengthy notes have been considerably cut in this printing, however, all notes of substantive interest or importance have been included.
