This book tells the extraordinary story of the Chevalier d'Eon de Beaumont, a figure who challenged the very boundaries of identity and espionage in 18th-century Europe. D'Eon, born in 1728, led a life of intrigue, serving as a secret agent for Louis XV, navigating the treacherous waters of diplomacy, and even adopting female attire at times. The author meticulously examines d'Eon's life, drawing from both published and unpublished sources, including the Chevalier's personal papers, and the secret correspondence of Louis XV. The narrative unfolds as a compelling blend of political history, biographical detail, and the exploration of a fascinating individual who transcended conventional roles. The book delves into the machinations of European power politics, the complexities of the French court, and the enduring questions surrounding d'Eon's gender identity. The author challenges previous interpretations of d'Eon, separating fact from fiction in a journey that reveals a complex and intriguing historical figure. This captivating account sheds light on a life filled with adventure, deception, and intrigue, offering readers a glimpse into a world where secrets, identities, and loyalties were constantly in flux. It details the conquests of Tamerlane, the politics of the Turks, the Greek religion and much more. Its 300 pages contain a wealth of information on the history of the world during the fifteenth century and is a fascinating read for anyone interested in this period. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

Charlotte d'Éon de Beaumont or Charles d'Éon de Beaumont (5 October 1728 - 21 May 1810), usually known as the Chevalière d'Éon or the Chevalier d'Éon, was a French diplomat, spy, and soldier. D'Éon fought in the Seven Years' War, and spied for France while in Russia and England. D'Éon had androgynous physical characteristics, appeared publicly as a man and pursued masculine occupations for 49 years, although during that time, successfully infiltrated the court of Empress Elizabeth of Russia by presenting as a woman. Starting in 1777, d'Éon lived as a woman and was officially recognised as a woman by King Louis XVI.
