Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Human actions unfold over time, in pursuit of ends that are not fully specified in advance. Rational Powers in Action locates these features of the human condition at the heart of a new theory of instrumental rationality. Where many theories of rational agency focus on instantaneous choices between sharply defined outcomes, treating the temporally extended and partially open-ended character of action as an afterthought, this book argues that the deepstructure of instrumental rationality can only be understood if we see how it governs the pursuit of long-term, indeterminate ends. These are ends that cannot be realized through a single momentary action, and whosecontent leaves partly open what counts as realizing the end. Sergio Tenenbaum argues that we need to focus on temporal duration and the indeterminacy of ends in intentional action, even to explain the rational governance of relatively simple actions. Theories of moment-by-moment preference maximization, or indeed any understanding of instrumental rationality on the basis of momentary mental items, cannot capture the fundamental structure of our instrumentally rational capacities. Tenenbaumprovides a new theory of instrumental rationality as rationality in action. Rational Powers in Action presents a conception of instrumental rationality as governing actions that are extended in time with indeterminate ends. Tenenbaum argues that previous philosophical theories in this area, in focusing on momentary snapshots of the mind of idealized agents, miss central aspects of human rationality. Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 2020 OUP hardcover edition. Unread copy in very good condition. From the cover: This is the first edited collection devoted entirely to the question of the role of animals in the thought of Immanuel Kant. Though the topic is not one treated systematically in his work, mentions of animals occur throughout his corpus in relation to many of his central concerns. In this volume, a team of leading scholars address issues ranging over Kant's theoretical and practical philosophy, including questions regarding the possibility of objective representation and intentionality in animals, the role of animals in Kant's scientific picture of nature, the status of our moral responsibilities to animals' welfare, and more. It also includes chapters concerning contemporary questions relating to animals and Kantian ethics and metaethics, making a use of Kant's philosophy to help contend with one of the most crucial ethics issues facing us today. Contents: Introduction: Kant and Other Animals: An Overview by Lucy Allais and John J. Callanan I. THEORETICAL PHILOSOPHY 1. The Comparison of Animals by John J. Callanan 2. Animals and Objectivity by Colin McLear 3. What Do Animals See? Intentionality, Objects, and Kantian Nonconceptualism by Sacha Golob 4. Kant on Nonhuman Animals and God by Ina Goy 5. Animality in Kant's Theory of Human Nature by David Baumeister 6. Kant on Evolution: A Re-evaluation by Alix Cohen II. PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY 7. Directionality and Virtuous Ends by Arthur Ripstein and Sergio Tenenbaum 8. Kant and Moral Responsibility for Animals by Helga Varden 9. What Do We Owe to Animals? Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - 'We desire all and only those things we conceive to be good; we avoid what we conceive to be bad.' This slogan was once the standard view of the relationship between desire or motivation and rational evaluation. Many critics have rejected this scholastic formula as either trivial or wrong. It appears to be trivial if we just define the good as 'what we want', and wrong if we consider apparent conflicts between what we seem to want and what we seem to think is good. In Appearances of the Good, Sergio Tenenbaum argues that the old slogan is both significant and right, even in cases of apparent conflict between our desires and our evaluative judgements. Maintaining that the good is the formal end of practical inquiry in much the same way as truth is the formal end of theoretical inquiry, he provides a fully unified account of motivation and evaluation.…
