L'ouvrage présente une anthologie de textes satiriques ou parodiques écrits en vers et en langue vulgaire du XII au XVe siècle. (Le genre est aussi représenté par des écrits en langue relevée, souvent en prose mais aussi en vers iambiques, on laisse de côté ces écrits). Noter qu'un même auteur, tel Théodore Prodrome, peut pratiquer la satire en vers ou en prose. Un premier ensemble de texte comprend 4 poèmes en vers dit « politique » de 15 syllabes (destinés à la lecture en public), ce sont les poèmes du Ptôchoprodrome (= Pauvre Prodrome), attribués à Théodore Prodrome, sans qu'on soit sûr de cette attribution. Le texte, qui daterait du XIIe siècle, se présente sous la forme de suppliques adressées à deux empereurs Comnène, Jean II (règna de 1118 à 1143) et son fils et successeur Manuel Ier (règna de 1143 à 1180). On trouvera ensuite un ensemble de poèmes de Stéphanos Sachlikis (XIVe siècle), très pittoresques et ancrés dans leur temps. Suivent quatre pièces : 1) Le conte plaisant des quadrupèdes, joute entre couples d'animaux qui s'injurient les uns les autres (XIVe siècle). 2) Le livre des animaux (=Poulologos) sorte de fable satirique est peut-être du XIIIe siècle. 3) La sainte vie du vénérable baudet (=Syaxarion) est une satire mais surtout une fable animalière, avec des traits de conte licencieux, XVe s. ( ?). 4) La messe de l'homme sans barbe (=Spanos) est une parodie d'office religieux, date du XIVe ou du XVe siècle. en français La Roue à Livres 344 pages 13,5 x 21.
