Condizione: Gut. pp. 99-118. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise good and very clean. - From the text: Alamemnon has returned in triumph, victor over Troy. Home at last after a ten-year absence, he has entered his palace at the end of a scene full of verbal and visual symbolism. His treading on red fabrics as he makes his exit clearly means something, since Clytemnestra has been so insistent on it. Just before following her husband through the door, moreover, Clytemnestra has uttered a prayer to Zeus which is terrifying in its ambiguity (Ag. 973-974). These things demand interpretation, but the chorus lack the key. At some deep level of awareness they have sensed enough so that they respond with an uncontrollable fear, and yet they cannot tell the meaning of what they have seen and heard. The song that follows the scene (975-1034) concerns that fear. Despite the chorus efforts, however, the song never proceeds beyond instinctive emotion to explicit understanding; by the end of the ode they still cannot answer the question with which they began (975-977): "why does this fear hover constantly in front of my divining heart?" Libro Copia autografata
Condizione: Gut. pp. 125-159. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication of the author. - Author's name handwritten on cover, Cover very lightly rubbed and a bit bumped, a bit dog-eared, otherwise clean. - From the text: No one needs to be told that in certain of his plays Euripides alludes to Aeschylus, and sometimes all but explicitly cites him. Except for scattered comments in studies of individual plays and three general surveys, however, attention to this matter has arisen in connection with those plays that treat the same myths as Aeschylus did, such as Electra, Orestes, and Phoenissae. In fact, reminiscences of Aeschylus occur, in some plays sporadically but often in what seems systematic deployment, throughout Euripides plays, and not just in those texts where we would expect to find him. The work most frequently recalled is the Oresteia, and the number and nature of the allusions suggest that the trilogy, end especially the parodos of the Agamemnon with its narrative of the events at Aulis, was a deeply but creatively problematical text for Euripides. The Odyssey as Social Process -- Bibliography -- Index. - The Odyssey, William G. Thalmann asserts, does not describe an actual historical society at any period but gives a selective, idiosyncratic, and contradictory picture to serve ideological ends, representing rather than reproducing social reality. The Swineherd and the Bow is an ambitious attempt to apply literary and social science theory to reveal Homeric epic as a form of class discourse within the context of early Greek social and political development. Drawing on recent scholarship in archaeology and cultural anthropology, Thalmann considers the evolution of Greek culture up to the formation of the polis in the late eighth century b.c. He demonstrates that Greek society was already stratified well before that date and that the distinction between an elite and other classes was well developed. Thalmann concentrates on the representation of slaves and on the dynamics of competition and family structure in the contest of the bow to interpret the Odyssey and, implicitly, epic poetry generally as an intervention in the conflicts that surrounded the birth of the polis. In the interests of the aristocracy, the poem appropriates a traditional cultural paradigm, enshrined in the story of the Hero s return. The distortions of dark age reality, Thalmann maintains, should form the basis of a historicizing reading of the poem. - William G. Thalmann is Professor of Classics, University of Southern California. He is the author of three books, most recently The Odyssey: An Epic of Return. ISBN 9780801434792 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 691 Original half cloth with dust jacket in additional plastic.
