Achter tralies blijken de inzichten van filosofen als Kant, Nietzsche en Lyotard een betekenis te hebben die rijker is dan wat jarenlange wetenschappelijke studie aan het licht brengt. Sterk autobiografische boeken melden het vaak in hun inleiding: 'Elke overeenkomst met bestaande personen of gebeurtenissen berust op louter toeval.' In dit boek is het omgekeerd. Alles kan gedocumenteerd worden aan de hand van proces-verbalen en getuigenissen, al vraagt de reconstructie van de auteur wel om een bepaalde manier van 'kijken', zoals hij aan de hand van een passage uit Nietzsche probeert duidelijk te maken. De auteur, hoogleraar Wijsgerige Ethiek, belandt in 2004 vanwege een zedendelict in de gevangenis en wordt vijf jaar later door drie aangevers valselijk beschuldigd van eenzelfde delict, gearresteerd en des te zwaarder gestraft. In die omstandigheden krijgen gedachten en inzichten van grote filosofen een betekenis die hem als wetenschapper waren ontgaan. De filosofische reflecties van Kant tot en met Lyotard bieden een levensreddende 'cognitieve therapie': een manier van denken en begrijpen waardoor je kunt overleven in een ineenstortende wereld. De filosofie in dit boek is dus levenskunstfilosofie, maar dan bedreven op de rand van de afgrond. Geen biografietje naast een filosofietje, maar filosofie in het zicht van de nederlaag. It is no wonder, therefore, that he always felt much at home in the Societas Ethica, the European Society for Research in Ethics, which he served as its president from 1991 to 1995. Robert Heeger is primarily a teacher and excels as a discussion partner. With his sharp analytical mind and his great intellectual curiosity he not only exposes critically the weak. points in an argument, but often also brings up creative suggestions to improve it. Thus he has greatly influenced his many students (he co-supervised fourteen doctoral theses) and his colleagues, both in the Netherlands and abroad. Moreover, he was one of the first moral philosophers in the Netherlands, and even in Europe, to be involved in environmental ethics and in animal and veterinary ethics.

He has always stayed in close contact with his Swedish colleagues, and twice he was a visiting professor at Uppsala University. With his eastern-German background, his roots partly in Russia, his thesis on the Italian philosopher Gramsci and his interest in Anglo-American analytical philosophy he has a broad international orientation. It is no wonder, therefore, that he always felt much at home in the Societas Ethica, the European Society for Research in Ethics, which he served as its president from 1991 to 1995. Robert Heeger is primarily a teacher and excels as a discussion partner. With his sharp analytical mind and his great intellectual curiosity he not only exposes critically the weak. points in an argument, but often also brings up creative suggestions to improve it. Thus he has greatly influenced his many students (he co-supervised fourteen doctoral theses) and his colleagues, both in the Netherlands and abroad.
