Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good Plus. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good Plus. 1st Edition. First American Printing as confirmed by McBride. The book would be fine save for shelf wear along bottom of boards stain on front text block edge. Else book is free of internal marking, spine is tight, boards rigid and tips are pointed.… Dust jacket is not price clipped and has overall wear, a little loss and tips and faded spine looks quite smart in its shiny new plastic cover. Shipping box is suitable for wrapping with a non-price listed purchase order inside along with biodegradable packing.

Trade paperback. Condizione: Good. xvi, [2], 357, [1] pages. Index, The cover has some wear and soiling. Foreword and Afterword by Winifred A. Stilwell. Introduction by Theodore H. White. Joseph Warren "Vinegar Joe" Stilwell (19 March 1883 12 October 1946) was a United States Army general who served in the China Burma India thea…ter during World War II. Stilwell served as commander of the US forces in the theater, and also as deputy for both Lord Louis Mountbatten, and Chiang Kai-shek, the Chinese Nationalist leader. After being defeated by the Japanese in 1942, Stilwell became an early American popular hero of the war for leading a column walking out of Burma on foot. In her book Stilwell and the American Experience in China, 1911-45, Tuchman wrote that Stilwell was sacrificed as a political expedient because of his inability to get along with his allies in the theater. His American men worshipped him. The Chinese armies he trained and led would have gone through hell for him. But the politicians, both in Chunk-King and Washington, hated his guts. And after two and a half years of bitter struggle in the China-Burma-India theater during the dog days of World War II, General Joseph W. Stilwell was abruptly relived of his command and brought back to the U.S. in an "atmosphere of crime. "From the time he flew to the Far East to assume command of the handful of American forces in the C.B.I. theater until his recall in 1944, General Stilwell was engaged in one of the most complex, difficult, and confidential operations in American military history The Stilwell Papers-brilliantly edited and arranged by Theodore H. White, who knew the General in the C.B.I. theater-record Stilwell's on-the-spot account of the people and events of the moment with the salty directness of a man obligated to please no one but himself. But this book is not only an account of the various glories and frustrations of war; it is also the autobiography of one of America's greatest World War II commanders. General Stilwell was a strong, courageous man, deeply devoted to his country and charged with crucial responsibilities; and The Stilwell Papers is the deeply moving and striking self-portrait of that man and his struggle. First Schocken edition [stated]. Presumed first printing.

A private record of the challenge and burdon of high responsibility of a great American General's experience in overseeing the training of the… Chinese Army during WW2. General Joseph Stilwell (1883 - 1946) aka Vinegar Joe was a United States Army four-star General best-known for his service in China and Burma. The China theater came under the operational command of Chiang Kai-Shek, commander of Nationalist Chinese forces, while the Burma India theater came under the operational command of the British. Arriving in Burma in time to experience the collapse of the Allied defense of that country, which cut China off from all land and sea supply routes, Stilwell personally led his staff of 117 men and women out of Burma into Assam, India on foot. His American men worshipped him. The Chinese armies he trained and led would have gone through hell for him. But the politicians, both in Chung-King and Washington, hated his guts. Within a forested landscape nestled between Cambridge and Watertown, our founders created an extraordinary place, one where the living mourner would come to find solace and the public would come to find inspiration. The founders envisioned the Cemetery as the place where the great and the good of Boston ? without restrictions on religion or race ? would be remembered and celebrated for all of time in a setting of exceptional beauty. Nearly 190 years and more than 100,000 burials later, we continue to honor that founding vision, offering burial space and end-of-life services to families in their time of need and preserving this landscape of memory for 200,000 annual visitors.Mount Auburn Cemetery is a singular treasure, a place where history and beauty meet memory and nature. Whether you come to bird watch, enjoy the ever-changing landscape, admire the monuments, or enjoy a contemplative moment in this urban oasis, Mount Auburn is here for you. And it's here for everyone: Mount Auburn is a National Historic Landmark that is open to the public at no cost, 365 days a year.
