Some wear to spine, covers & corners & discolouration especially to cover margins. ; 18 x 11.6 x 2.7 cms; 434 pages; Thà odore-Agrippa dâAubignà (1552â"1630) was a French poet, soldier, and historian, known for his fierce support of the Huguenot cause during the French Wars of Religion. Born into a Protestant family, he witnessed early trauma with the execution of his fatherâs associates and the brutal religious conflict that shaped his worldview. A close companion of Henri of Navarreâ"later King Henri IVâ"dâAubignà served as both a military aide and a political advisor, though he grew disillusioned when Henri converted to Catholicism to secure the throne. As a writer, dâAubignà produced powerful, impassioned works, most notably Les Tragiques, a long, searing epic poem chronicling the sufferings of Protestants, and the Histoire Universelle, a partisan history of the wars that was eventually banned in France. His legacy is marked by both his literary intensity and his unwavering moral stance. Ironically, his granddaughter Françoise dâAubignà would later become the Marquise de Maintenon and the wife of Louis XIV, a king notorious for persecuting Protestants.
